If you commit yourself to a drinking behavior system and then come up with excuses to break it. Example: "I'll only drink once a week at a maximum, and it'll only be on days off from work." Deviating from that, if you commit to it, indicates lack of control. Lack of control is often times due to underlying addiction.

Lame generic answer I know. In the spirit of the Misc and OP, I think if you drink to blackout you've got a problem. If you drink alone often you've got a problem. For me, 5-6 drinks within a short time span is a point at which I've gone to like a 7-8/10, where 1 = sober, 10 = blackout. So for someone like me I think going above 6 is a problem.

When you drink as a coping mechanism for your depression/life. Like coming home on a monday from work, get drunk, pass out, wake up and go to work repeat.

Dumb take. I probably average like 5-10 drinks a month (have had 3 glasses of whiskey and two light beers in the past 4 weeks for reference) and no way could I go an entire month without the thought of taking a drink crossing my mind, it is literally everywhere in our culture. According to your theory that would make me an alcoholic, JFL @ being an alky with those stats.

I read something like 15 drinks a week for a male.

Chit, I’d drink 15+ beers in an evening.

I think it’s not totally accurate though, me drinking that much and being Andre the giant size isn’t the same as some manlet having 15.

I think it's not so much HOW MUCH you drink in terms of volume, but how the consumption effects you.

If you lose your job, ruin your relationships, become depressed, get into debt etc. because of your drinking, then that is a more accurate indicator than how many mls.

Yeah, alcoholism is an addiction. It doesn't matter how much you drink, it's about whether or not you can control it. If you can't go a period of time without thinking about alcohol and craving it, then you're an alcoholic.

i think anything beyond a couple beers every day for an extended period of time would indicate alcoholism

just because you can crush a sixer of beer and 4 shots of liquor a night and function without issue doesn't mean you aren't an alcoholic

I think rock-bottom is different for everybody.

Reading some of these posts, certain individuals think 4 drinks is being an alcoholic because in their mind the number 4 is a lot. Another person would say 10.

In my view, it's only a problem if it's negatively effects your life. If you can't show up for work, help out around the house, become a turd then it's a problem.

I almost never have a casual drink after work or on the weekend. I'll only drink if it's socially around friends, but when I do it's at least 15-20 beers.

When I was single I used to get piled up 2-3 times a week because I do shift work and it was easy. But at no time did it ever effect my career or relationships.

Now that I drink maybe 1-2 time a months and my hangovers are a lot more brutal and I do notice I can't go black out anymore because I can say some pretty brutally honest things to people that I would hold back if sober. When I drink to get drunk I still know to not go overboard.

Daily or you are addicted to it. I suppose there are people who drink daily for fun but can control it. But there are people who simply can't go without it in which case you have a problem.

It's when you can't stop. Not how many you have. When you mean to have a couple and wake up with no memory after 10pm

or when you wake up unable to function and get through the day, and start drinking again that evening

Depends on the person. I never was a beer guy or I never really craved a drink or two in the evening after work.

Never felt the need to have a drink to unwind. But I decided to stop drinking a while ago because whenever I went out with friends I would get chit faced and used alcohol as a gateway to do other drugs, mostly Pepsi and such.

I would only do that two or three times per months but the hangovers were brutal. Decided to just quit that whole scene since it wasn't giving me anything worthwhile in return.

Sucks because I stopped seeing some friends that would love to go on benders and there were nice people not degens or vampires contrary to what you may think. They're still drinking and pepsing a lot to this day.

"There's no chemical solution to a spiritual problem." -Tony Soprano.

Replace spiritual with emotional. If you're drinking to cope with an emotional issue then you're an alcoholic IMO, doesn't matter about the amount.

I used to down a 6 pack every night and I didn’t consider myself an alcoholic. Why? Because I didn’t need it and I could stop whenever I wanted to (and did). I also didn’t get any withdrawal symptoms which would be indicative of a physical addiction.

People who drink a 30 rack every day or a 1 1/2 of vodka? Yea that’s an addiction. It’s definitely going to be impacting your day to day life negatively at that point and you also can’t stop immediately without detox unless you want DT’s which can be fatal.

So the questions to ask yourself are

-Can you stop (and safely)
-Is it negatively affecting your everyday life
-Are you using it to cover something up (I just used it to relax me, not hide from problems)

And that’s your answer.

My answers to the above were

1. To me one drink was too much and 20 wasn't enough
2. Any venue alcohol was offered I'd start with a beer. Didn't matter time of day or what the occasion was.
3. More than two moderate-heavy drinking sessions a week consistently

That is the legit answer. If you are thinking about it you probably have a problem. I drank 100+ standard drinks a week for years and when people asked me what was up with the amount I drank I said "it's part of the office culture where I work" "I have to drink this amount for work" "I don't get hangovers so I just have a good time" "I don't crave alcohol at all so im not an alcoholic" "I don't get the shakes from alcohol so im not an alcoholic lol"...etc whatever bullshiet.

It ended up with me turning into an Angry drunk for a long time. I was stressed and would drink to reduce stress. I'd get into arguments with people which would cause more stress and unhappiness. It was everyone elses fault. I was to blame for none of it and if everyone else would stop being an ass hole I would stop drinking so much.

I said a lot of stuff to people who matter/ed to me that I wouldn't personally forgive. I feel embarrassed thinking back to the time in retrospect.

Read the book "This Naked Mind" by Annie Grace. If you're under the grip of the grape you need to change brah. It will only get worse if you dont fix it.

I can enjoy a drink in moderation now, hell, even get drunk every now and then. Im never going back to what I was though and there are A LOT of people worse than me.
Too many people here are speaking off of unknown opinion... having not actually experienced it.

This dude knows. He nailed it. Anyone that has chased the demon to the bottom of a bottle felt like the above was basically explaining their own life.

I really debated this a lot in my head. I never had a drinking habit, but I was thinking about buying more beer.

I was looking at the rest of my life like, "What kind of drinking habit will I have as I get older?"

Maybe I could just have beer with dinner, or relax with harder alcohol.

Maybe I could drink this drink or that drink, maybe I could only drink in social situations.

In the end I decided it was just too much hassle and money so I just said phuck it and decided to not drink at all.

I stopped smoking bud a while before that, even though it is legal here.

Now I just feel laser-focused all the time like I was using sandbags before or something.

Feels like my mind is completely clear and I can do things that I previously couldn't.

There is no desire to escape reality, and all these simple aspects of life are much more enjoyable.

Today it was raining hard and I just sat outside under the porch and listened to it.

That was really all it took to enjoy life, was a great feeling.
