How much do you have to drink to be considered an alcoholic in your opinion?

Like how much of a 750ml bottle in a day of some 40-60% alcohol liquor?

I'm perfectly functional and I don't usually get drunk but I do worry about what types of habits I'm starting.

It's not how much you drink - it's the frequency.

Also strong username to addiction ratio.

Stop drinking for an entire month. If you can do that with ZERO thoughts about wishing for or missing alcohol, then you're not an alcoholic.

Imo it’s when you can’t resist it more than partake. I don’t think having 1-2 drinks after a long day at work is bad. But doing it everyday and then getting actually drunk on the weekends you’re body will start craving it more. If you’re even concerned about it my advice would be to stop for at least a month if not longer just incase to break the habit.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.

This is the correct answer. It shouldn't be measured in actual units, but rather the mental aspect. If the question is in your mind, there's a reason for it.

I have no problem drinking with friends, having a good time and being super careful about it. I'll have a couple-3 beers over the course of a few afternoon hours hanging out, stop early and drink water, then later on that night drive home. Or not have any drinks at all visiting some friends and family. No problem at all. But I also have a few drinks of rum almost every night after getting home from work to ease the mind, de-stress, and unwind. Would I consider myself an alcoholic? Probably because I've wondered about it.

I've wondered about this myself during COVID because working from home, it's been so easy to get into the habit of having 2-3 drinks a night, usually beer. Then on weekends I might have 1-2 more, but I stop before I get wasted because I know it makes me feel like crap the next day. But I'm drinking almost every night just to relax. About 1-2 nights a week I go without, especially if there's none in the house.

Curious if others have done this. I have thought about trying to go a week or two without it, but then I'm afraid that I can't - there are definite urges to drink on the nights I'm not, that's for sure.

Was doing 1 750ml bottle or more per day for a few months, so that would be my alcoholic phase I guess, now just 1 bottle every 1-2 weeks and that's probably still more than I should have. Love my whiskey though.

had a discussion with a mental health nurse years ago and it was described best; you’re an alcoholic when it affects you in a negative way. It can be your health, your social life, your family, a car crash, DUI…

It's a problem when it negatively affects your life

I don't think people just magically become alcoholics either, drinking to that point is a symptom of deeper issues

This. No shade, it's common enough but it doesn't have to be your life anymore if you don't want it to be. It only progresses - figure that chit out now.

Yep, was not a good place to be. Don't remember much of it, other than always feeling like ass which is why I cut way back.

Mine was creeping up during 2020 mainly due to lockdown etc so wife and I both took January off to dry out. I'd agree with the others - I usually find myself craving a drink in the evening but is that just because it's your habit or is it something deeper? If pausing is "hard" I think that's a sure sign you need the pause.

I've never had a negative consequence in the short term, and I try to keep my drinking at "safe" levels to not worry about long term health.

Biggest issue for me is it's hard to get to 15% bf when you're drinking lol.

This.

Take a week off. If you can't, you're likely an alcoholic. If you have the strong desire to drink at the end of the week, you're probably headed down that path.
