As an American I cannot relate to such tiny living conditions with no appliances and commutes involving trains/subways nor can I relate to a 30min travel time as being a long distance.

Reasonable if you live in a warm climate. A 30 minute drive through a blizzard avoiding accidents and other drivers speeding can quickly turn into an hour plus
