A Rolex Steel Sports Model watch is worth more money than you paid for it the instant you walk out of the store and will likely continue to appreciate in value over time.

The Fake watch is worth nothing and will continue to be worth nothing forever.

So which is the better investment?

F91W as a daily beater, G-Shock for high intensity sports and activities, and they even got stylish designs too.

The risk here IMO is that it's an investment based on speculation and greater fool theory, buying something purely on the basis that you'll be able to find someone who will pay more. And maybe the watches will continue appreciating in value until the end of time, that's certainly possible.

But if you look at the inherent value here, it could be argued that you'd need to be a little nuts to pay $100,000 for a watch that someone in China can replicate very closely and sell for a profit at $1000.


Do the high-end Chinese fakes pose a risk in terms of devaluing the legit watch market? My mostly uninformed opinion would say almost certainly not, but it's a risk I'd consider if looking at putting significant money into this stuff. If the grey watch market unraveled, a lot of wealthy people would be in for a lot of hurt.

The most successful person I know personally wears blue jeans, t-shirts, and Chuck Taylor's more often than anything else, and he has multiple 7 figure, if not 8 figure net worth. You can't always judge a book by it's cover.
