Because these people aren't just ruining their own lives. These people are killing and raping innocent people every day. Breaking into vehicles, homes, robbing businesses and people, causing quality of life issues everywhere they go, because of their bad decisions. It's not just "live with your own decisions". We all live in communities that get impacted by these poor decisions and allowing them to continue degrades the quality of life for everyone in the community.
I think it is invaluable and the only solution. Maybe some cases come from other reasons. Everyone's life comes with some potential problems. Without a positive social orientation like this, I do not see how someone would avoid problems in the realm of drug abuse.

What percentage of different crimes do you think occur because of substance abuse?

You want to get the tweakers off the street? Lock them up for years for being under the influence while committing another crime. It's not a disease it's literally a choice. Oh prisons are too crowded? Build more. America is more interesting in restricting people's rights over a vaccine these days than they are over shooting up and committing crimes. At the VERY LEAST any regular misdemeanor offense done while under the influence or in possession of a controlled substance (not weed) should be automatically upgraded to a felony or have mandatory minimum of 1 year.
relax Stalin

Why not just shoot all the addicts in the back of the head?

Why not shoot all the drug dealers. Sure cheaper than jailing them. Think about what you're saying... You sound like a dictator.

"prisons are too crowded, build more" wtf is wrong with you?

OP there's a difference between opposing the War on Drugs, as an ill-planned and bloated federal program which has been ineffective in its stated goal of reducing drug use, and supporting First Secretary Xiden's push to mandate compulsory heroin use in America's schools to fight white supremacy or whatever the phuck the latest plan is.

Making recreational drugs illegal is as insane as making prostitution or alcohol illegal.

Literally the only reason you'd do it is to encourage organised crime.

Repped.

The real misinformation is believing harsh punishment will solve problems. In reality data and examples such as Swiss, Portugal and Glasgow has shown that relaxing punishments, increasing funding in treatment / support and bettering poorer communities with work opportunities and education is far far more effective.

The other issue is that many drugs have been shown to have positive effects on mental health issues such as ******** and MDMA. Without legalising these drugs many institutes cannot properly carry out research and ultimately slow down progression to solving illnesses. State governed drugs can also effectively wipe out the black market and monopolise the consumer market by pushing down prices and mandating quality control for purity. Its simple business.

This also gets rid of negative secondary costs associated with heroin. The Swiss prescribe it and make it available at a clinic. This removes the need of addicts to rely on theft or prostitution to support their addiction. It also prevents the spread of disease through shared needles and street prostitution.

I have no clue what can be done about meth. The manic behavior and mental instability it causes are a problem.

a) freedom, even the freedom to make bad choices: like tobacco, alcohol, fast food and massive usage of legal prescription drugs

b) take the cartels and gangs out of the equation, without income their influence/power wanes

c) the product will at least be clean and have a measurable level to it, less overdoses when people aren't buying random stuff on the streets

d) people who use will still use, people who aren't using heroine aren't suddenly going to start if it's legal, tax it and use the taxes to pay for people to rehab. In countries that do this -- usage goes DOWN every single time.

e) You'd think with cheap but horrible drugs like meth, with safer alternatives to get a high, people just wanting to get fk up will do something less physically destructive. Why ruin your health and teeth with meth if safer pills exist that you can afford just as easily? People do meth because anyone can make it, not because meth is somehow better than oxy

So, less people using drugs, the drugs themselves are safer, less criminals, criminal organizations that exist lose revenue. Why not legalize, then? I still won't do drugs, I also hardly drink or do other bad stuff. Why would anyone use drugs if they aren't already?

Do you smoke cigarettes'? Why not? They're legal. They're gross and bad for you? Oh.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Some good replies ITT. War on drugs has been a massive failure. Heroin is currently illegal at both the federal and state level (in most states, idk about the pacific northwest lib zone) and its kicking our ass. Simply saying "hey you aren't allowed to use this" is not enough to stop it. We have to get smarter about it. It may be counterintuitive for some people to think that decriminalizing a drug will help the problem, but it allows us greater control over its use.

If a heroin user knows they can get free clean needles and shoot up safely inside a government RV, they will def do that over using the same AIDS needle that their pals use in the back of an alleyway after having just mugged someone to pay for the junk.

Kids aren't going to get into heroin and meth because its suddenly decriminalized. Nobody wants to use that sht unless they have fuked up lives. Kids get into that because they come from a shtty family with absentee/failure parents. We need to fix THAT tbh

THIS. Plus they're also making big money legally arming both sides. Look up for example the merida initivative 1.6 Billion USD was spent in the mere first three years of the war on drugs arming the mexican police and military with lots of US made weapons and gear. The miltary industrial complex has been making billions in sales of weapons, ammo, equipment and training gone towards arming the mexican military and police. Of course in the process millions and millions are going to politicians on both sides trough lobbying or straight up bribes.

Not to mention all the millions being made through small arms sales and ammo being bought legally in the US and then smuggled into mexico. 90% of the weapons and ammo used by the cartels comes from the US and most of it was bought legally. I saw a doc recently about gun runner smuggling guns into Mexico and thousands of guns pour through the border every day.

Not to mention the official budget money being allocated to government institutions on both sides like the DEA and such. In short everyone is making a killing fighting this endless war.

Also the current US opiod epidemic comes mostly because of big pharma. Strong opioid painkillers are being prescribed left and right to people with minor injuries who get hooked un them because they're highly addictive. When their prescription ends they are hooked and end up looking for the illegal alternatives to it. Opioid pain killers should be prescrived under dire circunstances not like they were fkn apsirines. A huge part of heroin users started because of a minor injury left them hooked on opium.

The cartels have adjusted accordingly and now growing more and more opium in Mexico to fulfill the demand. Also they're importing cheap chinese ******** and we know how deadly that can get.

Something being illegal doesn't stop someone. In fact it becomes something for "rebellious" types to do just to spite the system. Also, making something illegal often causes more problems such as crimes committing around the illegal substance than the actual substance. You think they would have learned with prohibition.

The only think I worry about is people get messed up on it and it's considered a "disease" or a "health issue" and they void liability. Keeping it illegal prevents a lot of that but we sell alcohol and keep liability on that.

It's just capitulation. People don't have the stomach for a real 'war on drugs' like e.g. Singapore or Philippines

That sort of reduction can't possibly be true. But obviously when you decriminalise things crime rate goes down. Abolish all laws, zero crime!

its highly ineffective

It also puts a bunch of addicts in an even more ineffective prison system which just further perpetuates their addiction and drug use. Just lol at throwing a drug addict into a cell for 6 months expecting a positive outcome.

An addict isnt going to stop being an addict until they are ready, and making them more impoverished and unable to get jobs even more because of jail time isnt beneficial at all. The real war on drugs should be fought by creating diversion programs for drug abusers. Drug dealers will still be arrested for other crimes because there would be no such thing as a drug dealer who only commits the crime of dealing drugs, its always associated with firearms, assaults, murders, unlwaful imprisonment, tax laws, federal laws, bribery, other criminal enterprises like prostitution and human trafficking.

The availability of drugs now and the distribution with the mail system really makes a war on drugs pointless. There is no where near the manpower or ability to adequately fight an online ordering and official mail parcel service delivery of drugs.

honestly most places in Texas now just write a ticket for small amounts if that, in Austin its pretty much decriminalized completely unless you are dealing. You have completely unmotivated police and attorneys who will no longer prosecute for personal use marijuana so why even bother you know.

Because there really isn't a "war on drugs". I can't even imagine the shady chit our government is doing behind the scenes in regards to seized drugs and money. They are just getting richer and more powerful, meanwhile it costs tax payers billions and billions of dollars.

Exactly, PEOPLE make MISTAKES even ABUSING drugs to a certain DEGREE as stated ARRESTING them PUTTING them IN jail TARNISHING their record MAKING it near IMPOSSIBLE to get a JOB an IMPROVE their LIFE is supposed to MAKE them STOP abusing DRUGS if ANYTHING I would PROBABLY abuse MORE drugs I already CAN'T get a JOB my RECORD is already TARNISHED. how STUPID.

If PEOPLE have a PROBLEM it needs to be FIXED JAIL only makes it WORSE sure some PEOPLE don't want to become CLEAN and MAYBE after a CERTAIN extent of TIME they should be PUNISHED but I guarantee IF they GAVE more people the CHANCE to get help and MOVE on to a MORE productive CONTRIBUTING to society lifestyle IT would be MORE productive for EVERYBODY. IT doesn't MAKE sense to KICK somebody who already has a DRUG problem while they're DOWN and OUT by PREVENTING them from GAINING meaningful employment and POTENTIALLY locking them UP in jail SRS.

Having DRUGS illegal as MENTIONED creates more PROBLEMS drug DEALERS cartels...etc

TRUE, people LITERALLY getting pepsi DELIVERED to their house I mean JUST lol.

SRS.

alcoholism by medical definition is a disease because of a proven genetic predisposition and categorical standards being met

but what it really is is a mental disorder. It is disordered thinking that is influenced by brain chemistry, that brain chemistry is influenced by genetics and biological response to stimuli from substances and how the brain wired that response.

Fixing that issue is far more productive to lowering drug related problems than herp derp throwing them in a cell to think about it.

Yeah, I agree COMPLETELY I think Loosing that DOPAMINE hit from BOOZE can make it hard to quit but SAYING your BRAIN chemistry MAKES you more likely to BOOZE or BECOME addict is JUST pure COPE.

I agree completely.

Our legal SYSTEM and DRUG approach is so BACKWARDS.
