In Northern Italy they average 5’10 apparently a full inch taller than Americans, Canadians, Brits, Australians, etc. In Southern Italy the average apparently dips to 5’8 and change, and Sicily it’s about 5’7 range. I would imagine this is due to poorer nutrition/lower socioeconomic status.
Also ethnic genetics probably contribute to that difference. The North has more Germanic input than the South and the South has more Greek and some MENA input, even if it’s not super drastic differences in most cases, both groups are primarily Mediterranean stock.

I hit my growth spurt early when I was in 5th grade... shot up to 5'9" and I thought I'd grow to be a giant.... but little did I know that the sooner you hit your growth spurt, the more likely you'll be to stay short.
The guys that hit their growth spurt later, like say 8th or 9th grade shot up to like 6'2".....
The reason is because if you hit your growth spurt early, that means you have a flood of testosterone, which means it gets aromatized into estrogen, and estrogen is what signals the bones to start fusing. Whereas the guys who hit their growth spurt later, they had time to grow a few more inches, and then the spike in testosterone pushes them way up past 6'.
MPMD did a video on the castrati on how the castrati were much taller than the average male, it's because the castrati had no testosterone and thus had no estrogen to signal their growth plates to fuse.

I've said it before but I feel like we merged timelines or something recently because ppl were not this big before
10 years ago 6'1 200 lbs would put you as the biggest guy in the room almost every time

It wouldn't surprise me if 5'9 is the average if you integrate over the entire population, but the vast majority of shorter heights will be older people. For younger people (under say, 35) the average is probably closer to 5'11 IMO. A part of it though is also the selectivity of our brains, in a crowd you're gonna notice all the people taller than you, and anyone shorter will basically be invisible.
Another part of why the average height seems taller is because you're taking a selective sample that may not be representative of the population. Especially in the gym, or out in the stores when people are scared because of covid (just lol).. so you may find that your sample ends up being predominantly younger people rather than older.
Most people fraud about height though, i'm 6'3.5 barefoot (legit) and the amount of people i utterly height mog who claim to be anywhere from 6'2-6'4 is unreal. I see people close to my height semi-regularly, but it's rare I actually see someone taller than myself (maybe once a week). People are definitely getting taller but it's not outrageous as people on the misc claim, they act like the average height is 6'2 now which really isn't truth, a legitimate 6'2 barefoot is taller than most people think, because everyone is frauding so hard.
