I have a lot of friends that have the Van Life. We camp year around. The vans are nice but I really love pop up campers. You can actually stand up in them while cooking, sit at real table, etc. I used mine every weekend last winter. I only use a camper in the winter, otherwise a tent is just easier for me.

Look into FWC (Four Wheel Campers) or All Terrain Campers or something similar. Tons of FB groups on there. They are amazing and being alum framed, they are pretty light, like in the 700-1000 pound range.

Huge bonus of a pop up is you can take it off and still have a truck. The van is single function.

Again, I'm not talking about a true RV or camper hooked up to running water and electricity somewhere, with a commode and shower either hooked to a external or internal septic.

With the way things are going, if you own a home right now you better be doing everything you can to keep it.

The 'van life' is a new age scam and only mentally defective useful idiot fools will fall for it thinking they can do that long-term easily and successfully.

Can you do it for a short period of time in discomfort? Yeah maybe for very hardy people. Can you make a good life out of it? Absolutely hell no not, and no properly thinking person would think that.

Solar can easily provide enough power for a small fridge and roof fan. Who was generator to power small a/c. It’s a tiny space, it doesn’t take much. Small portable toilet, if you’re in bum**** no where, solar shower. Get a gym membership for most of your showering. I did a 10k mi road trip and went to some awesome parks, beaches, restaurants, skydiving dropzones, hiking, etc. it was a great time. Barely anyone who does that plans on living in their van long term.

Install a heater, they make chinese knock off webesto heaters for $150, super easy install. Thermastat and all, set it at 70 and forget it for heat. Fuk AC, I have no use for that and I live in a desert.

I typically don’t winter camp and have never had a need for one. If it’s cold I just use a sleeping bag. I have to have an a/c because I bring my dogs. I’ll hit the beach when it’s 90 out and there’s no way they would survive without it. The first trip I did I had a tv and ps4. I think I used it one time over a several week trip.

I did it for a summer once in college.

Obviously you have to pare down your belongings.

Keep your vehicle clean and tidy.

Establish a routine.

I was working the closing shift in a bar. So I'd get off work at like midnight hang out until 2 and then go sleep in the van behind the bar after it closed. 2am ish.

Morning routine was get up at like 9, go to the gym, work out, then long shower, shave, brush teeth etc at the gym.

Then go to the coin laundry and charge my laptop and my phone while I washed my work clothes and gym clothes. Then go to the grocery store and get my lunch.

Then I'd have like 4-5 hours to kill before work so I'd go to a movie or go get a DVD from the library and watch it on my laptop.

This was all pre smart phones.

On weekends I'd drive out to the country and go hiking and camping etc. Edit by weekend I mean Tuesday and Wednesday a those were my days off. You don't want to go camping on the actual weekend. All the good spots will be taken and there will be weekend warriors and busybodies all over the place.

It was a really fun summer and I paid off a lot of debt not paying rent or bills.

I had to get a place in the fall because it gets cold here.

So my big advice would be keep the car clean and work out a routine.

Disagree. I am as far right conservative as they come and I liked it. If I wasn't married and a home owner now I'd do it again to save up money to buy a chunk of land up north to build a cabin.

That's my plan anyway but right now it's a five year plan. Without strings attached it would be a one year plan.

Just get a decent pull camper and a pickup truck then get a covered shell/bed cover for your truck to store other items.


Living in a van is too minimalist/poverty. Might as well get a decent truck and have something with a toilet, shower, heating/cooling, stove, fridge, etc.

Hell, even if I'm married I'm likely going to do that. I want to ride a MC on all the best roads in the country as well as visit our Western national parks.
