They can't help but use it because in American culture it sounds more exotic than it really is.
Hispanic Americans (or whatever they call themselves) are not real "Latinos" to us they're just as gringo as any other American. A real latino grew up or has lived through the struggles of the Latin American third world. To us they're just gringos, I can't help but cringe to pseudo Latinos like them. Who love to gloat about how Latino they're but can't speak Spanish lol.

Growing up in the US = gringo

And before you lose your chit, gringo is not an offensive term in any way shape or form. But Latin countries and the us have VASTLY different cultures regarding everything, from the layout of the cities to the food to the traditions, etc.

This Latino is my ethnicity but I was born and raised in the goat country. I can speak Spanish fluently because I started speaking it at a young age.
