Unfortunately, the extroverts rule the roost and will peer pressure everyone back in. Some of us truly don’t give a fuk about human interaction srs.

I agree OP! I’ve been working from home since the Covid crisis started(IT). It’s a much better lifestyle. Unfortunately I find myself working more hours than I did because everyone knows I’m home most of the time now. I still prefer it to going back into the office though.

Healthcare IT. I basically control all the data in hospitals or health sciences companies.

When you guys say you find WFH boring... Are you like, sitting at your computer all day doing nothing else? I do everything under the sun, waiting to get pinged for something to do, it's like every day is a weekend until I have to work for a little bit or have a meeting.

Well mostly sit all day do nothing, I have a home gym so there is that. I study and fk around sometimes, I do need to dial in to the occasional meeting and do some work but it's barely 5 hrs per week if im honest.

I run a side hustle but that has dried now due to some cirucmstances, thinking of picking up a new stress free job, but it's risky as it's borderline illegal here

Data programming, workflow knowledge, etc. All systems within the organization send data through me, so without my role they are nearly useless. As you can imagine, with the technical advancements and needs of today that is imperative and of utmost importance.

All network, security, and systems work is as well, but those roles are all SO much more easily accessible. Networks are networks, security is security, etc. and anyone can get into that. The data work isn't just programming, it requires a deep understanding of environment workflow and a lot else than just programming. I couldn't program **** outside of my environment, I taught myself to code specifically for these roles and have no clue how to apply it elsewhere other than scripting and syntax. Just like a hardcre programmer can't quite sit down and do what I do, unless there's some unicorn job where the how/what/why are explained and he just needs to provide the coding. I doubt that's happening much.

I began as a data analyst/PM and saw the potential for advancement, though even 6 figures then was a pipe dream goal (nevermind multiples). Even still, I could be a sucker slaving away in an office every day, actually working over 40hrs in a single role, and still not earning 100K. There are plenty of positions like that, doing the exact same thing. It's all in how you handle yourself and go for the gold, much like anywhere and any position. If nothing else, I like to share this info to help others realize that it IS true and possible to get out from a go-nowhere position. Granted you might not reach certain heights, but even a simple (but tough to realize if you've never considered/seen it) move like jumping companies can yield pay increases that over time can/will be life changing. That's how it started for me and as they say you eventually get bored w/whatever money you make. That's what led me to doing more, more, more. On the whole, I am 100% psyched to hold my #1 FTE role. However, to my family and our future it would be a disservice to not pull more and give us a totally different life. If I had to put in 80hrs a week that'd be different, but I don't. It barely impacts my day-to-day. It'd be ridiculous to not cash in.


Regarding something that I feel is more realistically accessible...if you can get into and some top certifications within networking, security, systems, etc. stuff and get into a healthcare environment...DO THAT. If nothing else they generally pay more than most other industries if you find the right place. Even if you pay dues elsewhere as you learn and become more experienced, make a hospital your end goal barring any incredible position that may pop up elsewhere in the meantime. Just my opinion, anyway.

Tech places are other top-tier earning industries, but have so many more eyes on them from a candidate perspective. Plus you never know what'll happen, if you want solid future outlook you can probably stay at a hospital forever. Tons of lifers in these places, and depending where you are (high vs low pay and workload, etc.) - that can be a blessing or a curse.

Thanks for sharing. In Australia hospitals pay like chit but you pointed out some IT field like networking and security where you believe juggling multiple FTEs is possible. It's not legal here but I reckon I can hide it
