Yeah that’s kinda that point. Fitting both energy but also effective musical devices within the genre.

Metallica and even Limp Bizkit experimented with this successfully. Pushing to the limit of audio engineering without going past the limit to where it’s just noise.

Still nobody posted a harder song than I did because spastic noise doesnt count lol

They were probably the heaviest sounding 90s band to achieve mainstream success/radio play etc

Actual heaviest band, nah. Lots of good examples ITT already, also bands like Fear Factory and Machine Head started in the 90s.

Hmmmm. I saw TOOL for the first time in the 90s and Korn in 2019 with Alice In Chains. I left midway during Korn. AIC killed them, even without Layne. I would have died if I saw them with Layne.

I’d take AIC with Layne over all others. It no wonder that Layne and Maynard were good friends.

At that particular time in the 90s - Sepultura and Pantera both sold more albums than Korn.

Sepultura at that time was considered the biggest heavy metal band based on global touring numbers- they were drawing insane crowds in Central America and Europe. Too bad they were imploding at the time- good for Ross Robinson who then turned his attention to Korn/ Slipknot/ etc.

I listened to slayer, pantera, Marilyn Manson, morbid angel, suffocation, bolt thrower, type o negative, Motörhead, sepultura, white zombie, tool, and six feet under and seen them by the time I got my first korn cd and was simply blown tf away by it. Then life is peachy.

After that the nu metal craze was on and it was such a great time to be alive slipknot, limp bizkit, disturbed, System of a Down, power man 5000, union underground, static x, kittie, godsmack, mudvayne

No one was harder than korn because the bands that thought they were couldnt bother themselves with good enough production to prove so.

Korn blended themes and emotions with heavy textures. Chitty black metal bands from the day just mindlessly harped on random scales and blast beated everything with no thought to dynamics. Its completely fukking laughable to state something as fukking PRETENSIOUS as "death was harder" jfc at winesniffing ass burnouts pretending to know anything about chit.

Luckily I love both, so djent/progressive today is hitting pretty hard.

Same. I was listening to brvtal metal bands before I heard korn's life is peachy. I knew then the others just couldn't creatively bridge that gap.

back in the 90s FF was playing to boring as drum loops and has a singer that sounds like he's being beat like a pinata at an 8yo bday. I love FF, but they're not in the same realm.

Some metal is like watching some random stranger die in WSHH video (bohemoth)

Some metal is like watching some ethot complain about not getting enough donations (emo)

And then there's metal where you watch 8 seasons and see your most prized character die in the most painful way possible (early korn)

And that's why they'll always be regarded as one of the best. They WERE relatable.

I like Korn, but Pantera was a whole other level who had actual mainstream success doing what they wanted.

Jonathan Davis had a lot of issues as a teen and most his lyrics were about that time period. Very relatable to younger audiences back then.

FF was sick too. I liked them and at times couldn’t stop listening to them but korn hit me hard.

Entombed, machine head, my dying bride, carcass, cannibal corpses and obituary were all good too during this time but korn were my bread and butter.

Deicide and ones who are more in your face with the blasphemy I couldn’t really find relatable as most the punks who were pseudo devil worshippers back then my teammates and myself used to shove around and pick on a lot. And rotting Christ? Just really not into the lyric content at all. Singing about satan? That’s as weak as it gets IMO but I did own Serpents of The Light.
Cradle of filth and king diamond too.

I went to a Danzig concert in 1994 I think. The openers were Korn and Marilyn Mason. I remember a bunch of us were like "who the fuk is Korn and Marilyn Manson"

I don't specifically remember Korn but I remember Marilyn Mason took his dik out on stage and waved it around for awhile.

It’s been a very long time since 1994 but Marilyn Manson was a band. By Antichrist superstar Marilyn Manson was more of less a him. Now it’s a celebrity not a band. But I do remember when they started it was a “them” not a him.

I used to love asking guys if they would be twiggy Ramirez without all of them knowing it was a man who just wears dresses kind of like the Asian member of smashing pumpkins only not to such an extreme lol.

Ethos Music came out in '94. The first song completely annihilates Korn's entire discography. If you don't know who Exit-13 is, you're not an actual metal head.



Soilent Green's debut album came out in '95, again, taking what metal could be to an entirely new paradigm.

Necro****ist released "Onset of Putrification" in '99, which was the same year that The Dillinger Escape Plan released "Calculating Infinity". If you're going to dismiss all the death metal bands previously mention as chaotic noise then they're beat out by these two who are known for their precision.

Korn & Deftones were the hardest "nu-metal" acts of the 90's

Only other bands that came close were late 90's acts like Slipknot or death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse

In terms of pure musicianship there were obviously a million other bands way "better" like Alice In Chains or Soundgarden, but on the topic of "nu-metal" and "metal" in general, it's hard to argue that Korn was NOT on top of the game. I still own all of their CD's, and their most recent album BANGS.




They stuck with their style and you have respect a band that sticks to their roots
