Nice! I got into older cars a few years back. It's become an addiction. First got a 1965 Mustang that I'm getting ready to drop a 500hp motor into. Then a 1953 IH pickup. Couple days ago a 1994 Eddie Bauer Bronco (because the wife wants power options to drive and ac in the summer).

It's gonna take some work to get into the 11's. My buddy has a GTX with 700hp 440 (supposedly) and he's just under 12. I'm sure he could cut that down if he tried harder. I'll be real happy if my mustang gets into the 11's and that's a 2800lb car with 500hp. The 4 speed will hurt my time.

Small town in Middle GA.....4br/3ba houses on roughly 1+/- acres, established, quiet.....houses in the $200-$250k range. Love it.

You bought the Buick, why not build a 455 for it?

Im not a numbers matching purist but that 455 was an iconic motor, is it that much of a cost premium?

So the original idea of building the Chevy 402 was based on the fact that my Father-in-Law gifted it to me b/c I had asked for it (since it's sat in his shop for 20 years) and my goal was to make him proud by rebuilding it and "putting it in something cool"

I was planning on buying a car without a motor but the Buick came along and I couldn't pass up the deal....so here we are. After disassembling the 402, it's been discovered that it spun a couple bearings and has some other issues and literally need a full machining/rebuild. Im kind of running through options right now, as I work on the other parts of the car to figure what direction I'm going to go for the motor.

My current thought of options
-Rebuild (with performance parts to get around 500hp) the 402 & TH400 as planned.....I'm looking at $6k
-Heads/Cam/valvetrain upgrade the 455 and roll with it....its tourqy AF right now. Change the rear gear & swap in a posi.
-......and the dreamer in me......6.0LS heads/cam swap it...but that comes with a lot more work and a longer parts list.

I dunno currently. My plan is to get the interior done, get the suspension done, rims/tires, rear end, engine, then body work.

I haven't measured, but it's definitely visible. The cam is all worn out and all the lifters are stuck in their bores (cant pull them out from the top), 2 spun main bearings.....

It's also a 1972 Block...which was kind of a dud....low compression, smaller valves, etc and only made like 240hp in stock form so to get it where I want it is going to take some $$.

This thing sat for a loooooong time and I'm sure wasnt running well when it was pulled.

If it seems solid I'd play around with carb/intake/exhaust, generally play on the cheap and keep it healthy while you collect parts and build your other motor.

Then buy a wrecked pickup with a 6.0 and a couple turbos out of wuhan.

Already done the compression/leakdown test. All cylinder are clear for takeoff! I had a missfire.....changed all plugs, checked wires, all were good..(which I later found out to not be the case)

brb compression test, leakdown test, valve cover off, videoing rocker movement...thinking I had a ground lobe on the cam/bent pushrod/dead lifter or something......nope it was just an intermittent short on plug wire #3 that I found by grabbing it at the right time and getting a nice shock. replaced the wire....good to go. At least now I know the other stuff is all good. lol

Yea, that's the route I'm leaning towards. The 455 came with an edlebrock intake, 750 CFM Quadrajet, Hooker headers to 3" pipe to Flowmasters and dumps at the axle. It was running rich AF and I've fixed that and can tell a difference. Ill probably throw some parts at the 455 to still have fun while building the 402 for "reliable" race type power. I'm thinking about going the Fuel Injected Carb, forged internals, cam, keep compression low route and throwing a single whirly-boy around 10psi on the 402.

The ridge doesn't look too bad. The lifters are likely stuck with a varnish brown carbon chit that accumulates at the bottoms. Carb cleaner will desolve it. That CRC brand is the best I've found for desolving that chit.

Yes and no....probably cheaper but a good bit more work. A basic LS in this area would run me about $900 from a yard, trans about the same. Then I'd have to deal with a full stock wire harness unless I want to drop another $1300. Heads/cam/mods would probably run around 2k, have to run new gas lines, pump, probably go with a new tank, LS swap kit around 1k, blah blah the list goes on.

My cheapest option (yet risky, not knowing the true state of the internals) is going to be heads/cam on the 455.

Successful weekend. Both Floor pans done, rust stopper sprayed, headliner painted, tach installed, dash "repaired" and painted, 6.5" speaker kick panels, 6x9's & Bluetooth audio installed, carpet, seats back in......even went for a little cruise.

Will probably be early January before I get to jump back into it, but next on the list is Suspension/Rims/Tires.

Also loving the green dashboard and the steering wheel design. You should consider an art-deco 1920s green hue for the interior upholstering, it would fit in very well with that dashboard.

Thanks man.

The plan is to prep the hood and the top (down to the chrome line) then paint them black and keep the sides/trunk green....Shine it up real good and let it ride. I'm leaving the dash the way it is, will probably swap the steering wheel out for a smaller diameter one since theres no tilt and that would make getting in and out a little easier.
