Just by looking at the guy I'd venture to say he isn't much of an outdoors-man. When the hike got incredibly challenging half-way through he probably did not know whether he should retrace his steps or keep going forward. When his wife inevitably couldn't continue on. He most likely lacked the strength and mental fortitude to carry his wife and child out of that situation. Or maybe his body failed and his wife was unable to go on/ could not go for help. He also most likely missed the fact that he could indeed have drank from the water nearby and dealt with the sh!ts/parasites once they were safe. Only focusing in on your not supposed to just drink water out of a river/stream.




Also want to point out CanAm Missing person project always notes missing persons/deaths in remote areas almost always have a few things in play.
-Boulder field
-Water source nearby
-Often the name "Devil" in some near by landmark. (In this case Devils Gulch)


Doubt if Dave is going to cover this case but I'd be interesting in seeing how many other hikers have gone missing/died in that general area.

I’m a pretty experienced hiker and I had my first taste of a desert hike in the summer this year. Really the thing that I didn’t plan for was the lack of shade to recover in. I had plenty of water and time and was fine but fuk there was no relief.

That is fukking awful, and I feel for the dog and the kid. The parents on the other hand were absolute retards and murder/suicided their entire family through sheer fukking stupidity.

My wife and I spend a few days hiking on our honeymoon, and even though max temps were only in the 80's for the most part we still brought along double the amount of water we thought we needed for each hike + snacks.

Prob on the way back but my guess is once the first person started having issues they stopped to rest and everyone's situation continues to get worse until no one gets out.

85oz of water is realistically enough water for 3 people for maybe 2 hours in that heat.. people don't respect the exposure, man. when you got no shade you just keep boiling up, especially city folk that don't know the area and are ill-prepared

Tragic but doesn't change the fact that the parents are a bunch of retards. The fact that they even had to bring baby formula with them should be enough to tell you it was starting to look like a bad idea.

How does this even happen, with them all being found near each other and dying at nearly the same time?

The article mentions there was even some remaining water (albeit 'little amount')

Did they realize things were getting bad and just start sprinting back to their car in a final attempt after realizing their bodies were shutting down, rather than finding a safe spot to recover?

This seems so odd, but then again, I am not too familiar with temperatures of 109, and when I have experienced that heat I had definitely avoided being outside due to discomfort... maybe this does make sense and it is just my ignorance to heat.

Very common for tech dudes from the West Coast.

He must have been out of shape to not survive 8 miles in a life or death situation on a trail made for normal people.

I used to run 15+ miles in 100ish weather with no water. It never felt remotely dangerous.

2.5L for all 4 of them isnt that much. for 8 hours. i used to carry 3L of water for just myself and would use that up in shorter hikes.
