MARIPOSA — Investigators said Thursday that a young family and their dog found on a remote hiking trail in August in a mysterious mass death perished as a result of hyperthermia and probable dehydration.

Mariposa Sheriff Jeremy Briese detailed the final hours of the former San Francisco clan that started a hike with a temperature of 74 degrees in the morning only to see the thermostat rocket up to 109 by the afternoon. They succumbed to the heat and lack of water on a steep stretch of switchbacks with no shade, he said.

It appeared the new residents of the community in the rugged foothills of the Sierra underestimated the difficulty of the remote trail, the heat and the unforgiving terrain, Briese told a crowd of reporters in the chamber of the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors.

Certain questions surrounding the puzzling case remained unanswered, such as exactly when the family members and their pet died and whether they passed away at close to the same time. They were found near each other more than two days after their hike began.

“This is an unfortunate and tragic event due to the weather,” Briese said.
Mariposa County authorities believe Ellen Chung, 31, Jonathan Gerrish, 45, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju, and dog Oski went on an Aug. 15 hike on the Hites Cove Trail loop. Hyperthermia occurs when body temperature rises to dangerous levels. The causes of death were determined through the autopsies, toxicology reports and investigation, Briese said.

“Heat-related deaths are extremely difficult to investigate, and I want to thank you all for being patient with us as we investigated this case,” Briese said. “As I’ve mentioned, the Gerrish-Chung family have been our top priority as we dealt with this horrible event.”

Sheriff’s spokesperson Kristie Mitchell read a statement from the family’s surviving relatives who thanked searchers and investigators for their work on the case.

“The loss of a close relative is a pain almost beyond words. When that loss is multiplied by four and one of that four is a baby of just 1 years old, then the pain is indescribable,” the family said. “When that pain is then further impacted by the lack of knowledge and certainty as to the reasons for their deaths, then the questions of why, of where, of when and of how, fill your mind all of the days and all of the nights.”

Investigators believe the family traveled most of the 8-mile loop before succumbing on a steep switchback about 1 ½ miles from where they parked their vehicle. Searchers found Gerrish in a seated position on the trail with his daughter and dog next to him. Chung was found slightly farther up the path. A cell phone was found in Gerrish’s shirt pocket, but there was no reception in the area, and investigators are still hoping FBI agents can unlock the cell phone to unearth more clues.

Briese said Thursday that the family was hiking with an 85-ounce water bladder backpack, which had only a tiny amount of water remaining when the bodies were found. Samples from that water were tested for toxins from toxic water blooms along the trail, but came back negative. They were also carrying some snacks and a bottle that contained baby formula, Briese said.

The family members were wearing shorts and tank tops, with no hats. The baby was carried in a backpack. The couple’s truck keys were found near the bodies on the dirt path. The family was about 1.6 miles short of finishing the loop trail, Briese said.

The dog’s cause of death remained undetermined, officials said, but it appeared the 8-year-old Australian shepherd-akita mix also suffered from the heat.

its weird that all of them died at the same spot.


how did the dog die too, it could probably drink the creek water and not get sick like a human.


2.5L for all 4 of them isnt that much. for 8 hours. i used to carry 3L of water for just myself and would use that up in shorter hikes.


still seems odd that all 4 of them just die in same spot.

Lol after a mile? What? Or maybe they died on the way back. Still how do you die on a hike. Hiked in 100 degrees plenty of times. Gave no care to water, was fine.

This is a real possibility when hiking. You've always gotta keep in mind that however far you've walked, you're walking that far back unless it's a loop. I've hiked with girls and said "okay time to turn around." They protested, but last half mile I end up carrying them lmao

He died sitting with the baby she was up the trail a bit.

it says they died about 6.5 miles into the 8 mile hike.

they didnt even wear hats which i dont get.

i did 8 mile hikes in areas with a lot of shade. it wasnt my first hike and doing shorter ones you learn what to take with you. i wouldnt bring a baby out in the sun for 8 hours in the fuking desert that is retarded. the baby probably started overheating and so they prob stopped and then things went down hill from th

8 miles was their problem. prolly would've taken 4+ hours for a couple just BSing around, the length of time is what did it. Grew up in a place where 100+ is average and being outside for a while is fine but if you're out that long with no water or shelter then goodnight sweet prince.

Its kind of incredible how some people can be 'smart' or 'intelligent' by one standard but completely retarded and foolhardy by the next. For some reason nature and 'hiking' is getting really popular with the city people (An unreal amount of girls on social media/dating apps say they like hiking). But a lot of these people aren't capable of anything other then a short, well groomed/cared for trail.


Just by looking at the guy I'd venture to say he isn't much of an outdoors-man. When the hike got incredibly challenging half-way through he probably did not know whether he should retrace his steps or keep going forward. When his wife inevitably couldn't continue on. He most likely lacked the strength and mental fortitude to carry his wife and child out of that situation. Or maybe his body failed and his wife was unable to go on/ could not go for help. He also most likely missed the fact that he could indeed have drank from the water nearby and dealt with the sh!ts/parasites once they were safe. Only focusing in on your not supposed to just drink water out of a river/stream.




Also want to point out CanAm Missing person project always notes missing persons/deaths in remote areas almost always have a few things in play.
-Boulder field
-Water source nearby
-Often the name "Devil" in some near by landmark. (In this case Devils Gulch)


Doubt if Dave is going to cover this case but I'd be interesting in seeing how many other hikers have gone missing/died in that general area.
