In the past I used to say this. Now, I'm much less convinced. The peak of capitalism was actually typified by exhaustive work hours and exploitative businesses (Industrial Revolution) not to mention it's dark ties to war (defense contractors, MIC).

And capitalism vs. communism is a fabricated ideological conflict propped up by activists and well funded think tanks. There are other systems that don't focus on centralization of power and wealth in the hands of a few.

I think you’re making my point, in capitalism no such thing would be possible, government control and corruption is precisely why Marx was wrong, and free-market is right, there are many more elements of free market in the United States than in Soviet Union, basically United States is closer to capitalism than Soviet Union was, Soviet Union was closer to Marks, draw your conclusions.

That's actually a form of capitalism: crony capitalism, lol

Corporate interests have long since locked down our politicians. And the masses don't care because there's a new episode of RuPaul's Drag Race tonight. Or the football game is on, or etc etc.

The peak of capitalism was the industrial revolution? It wasn't. Peak capitalism is now.

We have never had more goods and services than we do now. We have never had more capitalist economies than now.

Western countries are suffering because of all their social systems (other retarded policies) that are increasing inefficiency in their economies.

If you look at Asia it is booming and there is massive new wealth being generated and new cities that blow away western cities.

Western capitalism still works but is hamstrung by inefficiencies.

There is also too much centralisation of high skilled jobs in over-populated regions. In the west we need to de-centralise highly skilled jobs so people can have a good job in a low COL area.

This is definitely a point of view difference. I argue capitalism was at its peak in the industrial revolution because that's when corporations could fully exploit labor with very little pushback. You're arguing it's a matter of volume or number of capitalist states. Fine, because that's not even the primary issue.

Capitalism coincided with shady banking enterprise among many other detrimental trends. It's characterized by predation and priority of money over all other things, even in its non-crony form. To say it's hamstrung by inefficiencies is very strange to me....it's quite simple in that it's driven by profiteering, i.e. money talks regardless of what industry or endeavor you are involved with. The early mercantile systems that gave way to capitalism were also centered around acquisition of land and labor by merchants/financial elite whereas in the past it was far more common for people to work for themselves as craftsmen and be the sole owners of their own production. Rather than be paid an unequal wage to dedicate their production & labor for someone else. And we're brainwashed to see this as a gift of having a job.

Most of the stated benefits of capitalism are possible without such a profiteering and bank-driven system. Free markets & trade, private ownership, etc.

The industrial revolution is incomparable to the present day though. We were a developing country with primitive technology. Arguably after the factory conditions stabilized (more competitors entered the market and found more productive ways to operate instead of working peasants to death), work would be better there than spending twice as many hours on a farm working by hand.

Nah peak capitalism was in the 50s just after WW2. Obviously there were periods where we where the market was free-er and less corrupted but the 50's probably represented the time where American consumers had the best buying power in history, even compared with today.

Your definition of capitalism seems to be stooped in some sort of left wing propaganda.

Capitalism is simply free markets. People can buy what they want, traders can trade what they want and people can work for who they want... market forces determine what people do.

Capitalism is at it's true peak when the market has maximum freedom and so do people. In western countries we have deviated from true capitalism by over-regulation of markets and over taxation of workers.

The idea that capitalism exploits workers isn't true, both the worker and consumer are better off in a capitalist system. Ironically Marxism truly exploits workers and throughout every Marxist country people are being exploited; many of which live under full blown slavery.

I'm not really intending to draw any comparisons, mainly to focus on the core structure of capitalism. Basically the IR was an example of the profiteers overestimating how much they could exploit people, and labor unions grew in power in response, IMO. But still....it's a simple concession for profiteers to make. Little better wages and work conditions are a small price to pay to expand (x) business empire. Compare that to pre-merchant/capitalist societies where people worked FAR less hours and still owned their land and business.

As a former pro-capitalist, I'm guessing some of what I'm saying seems foreign. Here's a source that discusses work-life balance prior to capitalism:

https://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/use..._workweek.html

Bankers, MIC contractors, big businesses profiteers, power-hungry politicians....all BIG supporters of capitalism.

It is absolutely and unequivocally NOT simply free markets.Though capitalism may have a variety of definitions depending on the source...the fact that free markets existed LONG before capitalism ever did (like...millennia before) means it cannot be defined as simply free markets. Trying to pin my argument as left wing shows you're stuck in the socialism/communism vs. capitalism dichotomy.

I think if you really compare my points to left-wing commies, you'll see clear differences. I'm not just harping on about "muh wealth disparity/muh workers rights" and actually trying to explicitly state how capitalism circumvented the ownership of production as it already existed in around 1600's Europe. I'm not talking about splitting up ownership among employees, I'm saying capitalism made it so people who already owned their own land, had a skillset, and produced for themselves were instead driven towards city centers and motivated towards dedicating their time and production to the wealthy, who themselves are beholden to a debt-driven banker system.

If you never stepped out of the Socialism/Capitalism mindframe, then all this is probably all new to you, so I implore you to read about the history of capitalism and pre-capitalist Europe. Then read about financiers and their influence on various state policies that motivated seizure of common and ancestral lands from the people. The history of bankers and their influence on society is probably the biggest tragedy of world history and it's rarely discussed. Capitalism is one of their greatest vehicles to seize wealth.

I probably use the term 'marxist' a couple times a year. Shorthand to describe the beliefs of one person or a group of naive, angsty people's beliefs. Overusing a lot of terms is a crutch. But I don't expect every conversation to be written in stone as a position statement. Relax OP.

Even if what this socialist feminist argues is true, pre-industrial societies had vastly lower standards of living, which could explain the less hours worked. Today we have so much expensive recreation, technology, variety and surpluses of foods, medicine, security, infrastructure, etc., which would be considered commonplace for average and even impoverished workers. Previous societies in comparison were exorbitantly plagued by violence, disease, and famine. Today you can hop onto the internet and play video games, chat with people all around the world, read articles/books from millions of sources, watch TV/movies, etc., when on break or vacation. In the past you would drink some ale or take a nap on your free time, get robbed and beaten on your way home, contract a horrible disease along the way, and starve to death because the crops failed that year.

The blip in working hours during the Industrial Revolution can again be explained by maturing industry. Economies of scale, innovation, and competition would improve these to the point that regulation had a minimal impact (up until the early-mid 20th century of course), though there will always be the debate of how much "exploiting" occurred.

You can be of any political persuasion and still be correct on a few things and wrong on others. Like how Republicans are hopelessly wrong on military intervention but better on other issues.

You seem to be focusing on technology between different timelines as a measure of standard of living. That's a given modern society is more advanced in tech and health care, that isn't simply due to capitalism. Maybe capitalismaccelerated some proliferation of consumer technology, comfort, and abundance, but it did so at a great cost and it's up for debate whether that's better than the system before where people had far more leisure time and we didn't live in a cut-throat profit-seeking culture. It also results in a society driven by cash which means bankers hold all the power, not the people.

Your anecdote is not very applicable IMO, people get robbed like crazy today. Could probably even argue that the consumerist culture that arose in capitalist society has led to far more illness and disease through mental health issues, poor lifestyle choices, and obesity.
