I'm not sure why everyone is losing their damn minds. We knew this was coming. We should be excited and loading up on stocks/crypto at the low price point.

Didn't you do the same thing when Covid lockdowns hit or am I thinking of another high net worth miscer? Why not just hold fast? In the grand scheme of things the market always recovers. And history proves that time in the market> timing the market.

Not only am I not selling. I'm continuing to buy. I had some cash in a safe that I'm going to be depositing in my bank. By March I suspect Ill have 0 cash and I'll be buying as much as possible with every paycheck.

Yep, sold when a bunch on the way down, bought back in on the way up, made a couple of hundred K in the process. Had we had the balls to sell right away it would have been glorious but whatever, still did pretty OK.

We also put a few hundred K into an annuity, traded a 6 year lockup for downside protection just in case the bottom fell out during COVID. That part is protected if the market continues to sell off. In all other circumstances I kind of hate annuities and have never even contemplated one before but COVID was putting a bit too much fiction and emotion into the market.

Its tempting to buy more on the way down but if the drop is protracted I will eventually run out of available funds. I'd rater profit take and capture a bigger piece of the bottom later. Being liquid as the market tumbles feels a lot better than watching it fall while being all in.

I did the math on another forum I'm on.

IMO a fair market value for SPY is $300, and even that's on the high side. Let's say the Fed doesn't intervene during a correction down to $300, and doesn't intervene to re-blow the bubble afterwards. At 5% GDP growth, it would take 9 years to get back to today's prices and 10 years to break new ATHs.

Tl;dr either the central banks re-inflate this mess or the 2020s are going to be a lost decade.

Sure, if you aren't planning to retire for 40 years then keep buying in. But if you are thinking shorter term, you could be underwater for years buying at today's prices.

I am staying cash until the FOMC meeting Wednesday. The Federal Reserve alone decides if this market rebounds or this market tanks... I'll wait for them to make their call.

Pretty sure I told you guys to start turning to cash in multiple threads over a long period of time but you didn't listen, y'all wanna babble about inflation instead lol.

I have a pretty good idea about next week, be it rally or bust.

There really is no point trying to save y'all, so I won't.

Are you guys buying any securities to buttress against the tanking market? Bonds? Gold? High dividend stocks? Low volatility securities? etc?

As I've gotten older and closer to retirement I've been changing the ratio of stocks to bonds in my portfolio. The problem the last few years has been that even though I've been selling stock funds to buy bond funds the percentage of stocks in my portfolio has stayed roughly the same (even increased). That's not bad, I'll take the gains. Now, with the little correction we're currently going through my portfolio is rebalancing some which is a good thing overall. Yes, it's hard to watch 100K+ changes in portfolio value so I ignore the absolute dollar changes and instead make sure that the balance between sectors is where I want and that the underlying funds are still worth having. Since I first started investing many years ago (early 80's) my total portfolio (401K, emergency fund, house purchase funds, etc) has returned %11.8 per year. Sure some years are better than others but over time it's worked well and I haven't resorted to market timing or day trading. So, learn some patience and invest in things that you can explain. It's nice having a 7 figure retirement portfolio that doesn't include the pension or 401K with my current employer or real estate investments.

The housing market won’t crash anytime soon if rents are still expensive.

Why rent when you can put 3% down as a first time home buyer.

I bought a crapload of PMs over a decade ago. Only killed it with Palladium, I got in at ~$350 to $500. Probably going to pass Silver and Gold onto my kids (not officially obviously) but will sell all of my Palladium and Platinum at some point.

7% ain't bad, but 7% in a week is, and 7% in a week for a market that still has 30+% to puke is really fukking bad. Peloton and Netflix both lost 2 years of stock gains overnight like it was nothing.

Why rent when you can put 3% down as a first time home buyer.
I've seen a spate of videos claiming that RE is about to crash. But I also read that supply is tight; 1 million homes for sale in December 2021 compared to 1.7 million homes for sale in December 2019 in the US. OTOH mortgage interest rates are up nearly 1% from December 2020.

So IDK- will higher rates and tight supply cause more wanna be buyers to sit out this spring, or will those who have been waiting to buy decide they have to pull the trigger before mortgage rates go even higher?

This could also be affected by the Fed meeting.

I feel bad for anyone holding cash right now. The Fed has been, and will continue to use the wealth that lies in the dollar as its personal savings account to bail equity markets out when they fall.

TL;DR The Fed holds the cards, and they've proven time and time again that they will sacrifice the dollar for equity markets.
