And Kobe didn’t transcend sports IMO. Few athletes achieve that. Maybe Ali, Tyson, Usain Bolt, Cristian Ronaldo.

Kobe was a basketball player, big player, famous, nice guy, but outside of basketball (which is outside of the USA) not many people really cared. They were more sad at the tragedy of the event, has he been a 70yr old nobody would care.

Ali was a hero and truly transcended sports. Tyson was the “baddest man in the planet”, that’s a different sort of aura. Bolt has basically become synonymous with speed, which is bigger than basketball since everyone can relate to speed. And Cristiano has inspired millions all over the world, from the Europe to South America to Asia to Africa. Although he has t “transcended” his sport as much as the other guys.

Kobe was a great ball player. I guess the second best of his generation.

Very true-the only time most people in the UK knew anything about him before his death was the rape stuff-he didn't transcend Basketball worldwide like Magic Johnson, Rodman & Shaq did-where even if you weren't a fan of the sport you knew who they were. Warne transcends Cricket in Europe, South Africa, other Cricket playing countries in Africa, Zimbabwe, Caribbean, Subcontinent, but very few in the US would know him other than because of Liz Hurley-only expats really. That is purely due to Cricket never really taking off to the masses in the US-I doubt many Americans have even heard of Don Bradman or Garfield Sobers. Just like most people outside of the US who aren't fans of American Football would be able to name anybody-maybe Dan Marino, William Perry as he had some mainstream name over here in the mid 1980's when American Football on television took off & Dick Buttkiss for his acting.

Not really-the players are constantly moving in the field-running after the ball to save runs/boundaries, leaping/diving to make catches, charging at the ball to effect a run-out etc. They are often batting in extreme heat or cold. Soccer teams play what once or twice a week for 90 minutes a time. There aren't too many porkers in the modern era-but even back in the day the fat guys could still move-David Boon was probably the best short-leg fielder ever & pulled off some blinding athletic diving catches. Botham's diet was booze, ***s & curry-he was pulled out of panto for emergency cover in early 1992 & looked like a blimp at the WC-but he was one of the leading bowlers of the tournament at 36 years old & made some good runs & fielded brilliantly as well. Fast bowlers sending down 20 plus overs a day with their long-run ups.

I would love to see other sports playing five consecutive days, for a third or so of the day-none of them would do it.

LOL no cricketer could match the fitness of the avarage footballer,, wearing trousers while playing elite level sport

there is a reason why Indians play cricket........one track and field gold medal in olympic history........zero representation in 99% of sports at a decent level
