i feel like early on in the more jim crow days they were just considered black people and they had no choice so they just embraced it.
but I feel like now it's taken on it's own form for different reasons. it's become more of a trendy thing to identify as a minority group as a source of pride. imagine in 2022 saying you're proud to be white lol, probably get cancelled. but nobody will bat an eye if you say you are proud to be black and you'll be praised and commended for it.
i'd rather get away from the whole identifying and being proud to being a certain skin colour tbh and just be proud of accomplishments and things that you can control that you did with your own two hands. i think it's okay to be proud of your culture/heritage/where you came from but i'd put individuality above that.
at the same time tho, I think it is also where you were born, how you were raised, how your friends/peers looked at you, etc so it's more complicated. maybe they were raised and more exposed to the white or black side of their family. grew up with a lot of black people as friends, etc.
I have alot of mixed family members. none of them really care or put much thought into what race they "identify" as.

"White" is an amorphous term that refers to someone with light skin. Biracial people often have darker skin, and wouldn't be considered "White". I don't think this is that complicated...

My daughter is mixed black and white. When people ask what she is she just says bi-racial without a skip. A lot of people think she is Spanish mostly Puerto Rican which she is definitely not.

But for my kids the nurse and hospital told us we could put both Asian and white and the kids know they are both and they know the Asian stuff they do and the white stuff we do. (Dinners with white rice vs dinner with potatoes and bread etc..)
It’s really not hard to have both cultures and appreciate both cultures for biracial families at least for us. But I also grew up and lived with my Asian best friends when I was 18 until starting my own family so it was more natural to just meet people in the community I hung out with.

i'm white and filipino but people think i'm spanish/hispanic. it wasnt that hard growing up with two cultures since i had the best of both worlds. the hard part was telling mexicans i dont speak spanish and that i'm not hispanic.

My brother and I were the only ones I knew really.
No one ever called me white names but I was called black slurs plenty.
Thing is my mother side is part Irish Scottish so I have more white than black. Did the Ancestry thing and I'm prob only about 35% black. My fathers side is Ukraine/ Belarus/ Czech etc mix.
People don't see white when they look at me. I've actually been mistaken for everything from Hispanic to Spaniard to Polynesian ( especially when I was younger and my hair was longer).
BTW.. I've always declined to put B or W on applications and have often written "human" in the other option of the race line.

Inversely, many blacks think the opposite. You're not dark enough to be real black, you don't know the struggle.
