I was born in 1972, back in the 90's we were the forgotten generation that came before Gen X and after the groovy 1970's kids. Now they sort of lump us in with Gen X, but there are a lot of differences between us and kids born a few years later.

I'm pretty sure the kids born in 1976 were spawns of Satan. They always seemed more wreckless on the playground.

We didn't brainwash them at all. I haven't once mentioned LGBTQXYZ+ to my daughter. It's the media and their peers who are into the pronouns and changing their sexuality each week.

Gen Xers started hitting their teen years as early as '78. As far as music, we were more influenced by 80s music.

The angst came from the world we grew up in. People used to trust and look up to politicians until Watergate destroyed that trust, and we grew up in the shadows of Watergate. The economic mess of the Carter years stuck with a lot of our families through the 80s in the same way The Great Recession still sticks with a lot of Millennials. We were the first generation that dealt with mass divorce. Our parents' parents fought through whatever mess ravaged their marriages, and stayed together, but our parents split if one got annoyed by the other's bad habits. We never knew if our parents would be the next to split.

Reagan raised the retirement age for Social Security, and that told us the program wouldn't be there when we were old and retiring. Boomers still believed the program would be there for them, but as kids, we were the only generation at that point to see SS as the Ponzi scheme it was. You want angst? Imagine knowing you would grow up, work for 45-50 years, and have your retirement rug-pulled.

Boomers grew up in the Cold War, seeing Russians everywhere and living in constant terror of nuclear war. When we came along, Gen X knew neither side had no stomach for pushing those buttons, but that didn't stop the Boomers from trying to instill that fear into us.

Wall Street realized they could make more money by liquidating companies, so they spent the 80s and 90s selling off assets and firing the workers. People wonder why companies aren't loyal to the workers and offer them the perks they used to in the 60s? This is where it started - those companies showing workers for the first time they were a liability, that businesses were worth more without them. That was the work environment we entered, so it should be no wonder we have no loyalty to an employer when the owners could fire us at any moment to liquidate the business.

Grunge wasn't the cause of the angst we experience, it was the product that came afterwards.

And how is that relevant at all? I don't dispute a very small percentage of the generation created these innovations but please remind me of the time 2% of a generation created that great thing?LOL! Is that supposed to be an insult to Gen X'ers? You are definitely a millennial easily spotted by the unashamed admittance that you take no responsibility for your own life because everything is the fault of your parents Life is just so unfair, nothing you can do right? They owe you! That's why your generation is the first in American history to regress, failing to exceed the accomplishments of your parents.

But honestly not complaining, the laziness and stupidity of the later generations makes it very easy for me to continue making very good money without even trying because even though we made coding so freaking simple, you idiots still can't do it better than a $30/hr offshore developer.

Yep Gex X is the GOAT (now that the pre-boomers are mostly dead). We grew up without technology and with. We are the voice of reason in this boomer infected world.

Gen X here. Definitely the best generation. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s was the goat.

Not to mention a lot of 1997 kids (me included) spent the ENTIRE childhood without internet, smartphones, ipads, social media etc etc.

Gen X are the ones building the world right now.

Boomers are half dead, spend all day chitting themselves, eating soft foods.

Zoomers can't hold a job and just jack off to porn all day.

Things I remember from my day growing up:

Parents telling you to get on with it. Or just not giving much of a damn about you 24/7. Holidays from school involved finding your own entertainment, just be back for dinner.

Fear/respect of teachers.

Learning that life doesn't care much, so enjoy it but get resilient fast.

The latter point I don't see as pushed as hard by parents but it is a different world now.

This is it right here. Gen X basically sucks. Ask yourself what Gen X has accomplished that wasn't started by a boomer or millennial. (Microsoft, Smart phones, ********, etc.) The only notable Gen Xer that is changing the world the way boomers did is Elon Musk.

They are not as accomplished as the boomer Gen and had it better than them, while also making it worse for the next generation of millenials. They rode the coat tails of boomers then slacked off a whole generation.

Gen X is the weak link. They should have been the ones turned into a meme. But they did create the best generation of music imo, I'll give them that.

Who knew you could look back on boredom as a gift?

I've seen two generally unrelated interviews that have touched on this:

- internet/smart phones have killed youth culture [the authentic source of trends and group identity in the modern west]

- internet/smart phones have destroyed presence for the majority of us [brb at a restaurant w/friend and looking at your phones, brb at a concert and focused on "filming" with your device, brb...]

i'm 1995 and we're in this weird middle ground where our young years were tech free but our teen years were basically all internet. weird place to be srs. it's like i never even grew up.

Every single point in that post just shows that your gen didn't make any improvements. Just blame it on the boomers (parents). All of those factors you "dealt" with are worse than ever now. And what does your gen blame that on? Millenials?

It's just funny how your gen is never actually mentioned in the culture clash, as if they never even existed. They just seem to sit there in the background, while being the ones to actually perpetrate clown world on the rest of us. Although these old Boomer fcks still call the shots, your gen are basically their minions.

Your gen didn't really change or contribute much. Just latched onto the the previous gen and passed those problems onto the next Gen after making them worse.

You are literally making the same point most Gen Xers are making here. Progress should be slow and incremental not swinging like a pendulum everytime a new generation starts to take over. GenX isn't trying to rule the world or spend all their time on the internet yelling "look at me, I'm so fkn special. "

Boomers did their own swing during their generation; went from hippies to neo-cons obsessed with religious conservatism and now they are back being uber lib degenerate hippies. Reason why politicians in that age group are referred to as the Uni-party. Ultimately they keep hooking their generation up regardless of how it affects other gens/the world at large.

Millennials are basically like whiney counter culture boomers but without any REAL life/cultural problems to whine about so they just create them out of thin air.

Gen Z might come around. I think Millenials are redpilling them into thinking more like Gen Xers. The jury's still out on that though.

Back to boomers. It's sad but true to say this, they need to die off or go be completely irrelevant in a nursing home or something. If I could be Thanos for a day, I'd snap my finger and strip that generation of all their power and wealth so we can move on.

never again will people have privacy and stuff. some comedian made a funny observation that back in the day, when you were supposed to meet a group of friends everyone just showed up. now cuz of phones...people cancel...change plans etc with no notice.

If you want an idea of who's been shaping the world we live in, think about this:

Every US president from JFK through George HW was from the Greatest Generation. They may have saved the world in WWII, but they took the postwar boom time and slowly destroyed that. It took more than a decade for the free-spending government expansion of the 60s to catch up to us and destroy that economy. When faced with their own mess, they stumbled and meandered their way though it in the 80s.

Clinton, George W, Obama, and Trump were all Boomers. Clinton figured he could save the economy by repealing Depression Era regulations that kept the markets somewhat stable. He gave the Big Banks the green light to gamble with the economy the same way they did in the 1920s. We had a decade of good times, but he created a bubble that led to the second greatest economic disaster when it burst after he left office. George W benefited from that bubble. Like LBJ with his social programs, Bush spent the money on his wars. Give him credit for handling the crash the way Herbert Hoover should have handled his, even if the country hated him for it. But he was another Boomer that spent everything and passed the bill onto Obama. Obama, another Boomer, took a country that had mostly put its racially troubled past behind it, and he opened the wounds. He spent his 8 years dividing the country and Trump spent his 4 years playing off that division.

Joe Biden is from the Silent Generation. The politicians in Washington who have been establishing the laws and molding the social programs are a mix of Boomers and Silents. They're still running this country and they're responsible what's going on because they insist on holding the reigns of power until they day they die.

What you can blame Gen X for is the parenting. We were the first generation that grew up with a high rate of divorced parents. We were the first generation that grew up with many not having fathers in their lives. Because of that, we wanted to make sure our kids didn't go through that. We're the helicopter parents because we're making up for not having that in our childhood. We're taking every other day off work so we can be there for every stupid little moment in our kids' lives because we think we're being the parents our parents weren't. We're responsible for a generation that doesn't know how to take care of itself because we never let them fend for themselves the way previous generations did. But the youngest of us are past 40. We're not the ones mutilating our children's' genitals, forcing hormone treatments on them, and switching their genders for a few Instagram likes.

Similarly, all Millennials are old enough now to take responsibility for their lives. I'm sure no one had the childhood they thought they should have. But as adults, what are you doing about it? Are you making the life you want, or are you laying down to rot and blaming everyone who came before you because that's easier? Gen X told itself it wanted to fix their perceived wrongs, and that's why we fly under the radar - because we're too focused on ourselves and the world around us to play that blame game.

Gen X are just boomer lites. Literally nothing defines this generation.
