Ive gotten more into cardio and HIIT in my 30s, the endorphins released feel amazing. Listen to David Groggins while doing cardio, dude is a MACHINE. Went from being an obese kid to being the fittest man on the planet. Says he absolutely hates running, its why he does it everyday.

I started running last year at 42, I'm 6'1 and 215lbs. I did C25K and really enjoyed it, it's great progression and allows your body at adapt. People who complain about pain and injury do too much too fast. I used to hate running but now quite enjoy it, it can be very relaxing once you adapt and learn to go slow.

this has always been a terrible argument. Marathon runners look like that because it helps them in their sport, holding muscle like a running back would not help them.

That does not mean low intensity cardio is not as good as high intensity cardio

Get some GOOD shoes is most important & start slower & slowly push yourself especially after 30-35.

I am not a big jogger but really enjoy HIIT because it's much quicker and applys to my basketball & football more than jogging.

weight lift 4 days a week,
HIIT / JOG 3 days a week
Basketball & or football 1-2 a week
keeps me in shape at 35.

We are on a bodybuilding forum..don't think we want to look like a marathon runner. If adding cardio while retaining muscle is the goal, sprinting will aid to that goal, long distance running will not

yeah I never make it past that 1-2 month period.

That is what I want to do, just run a few miles a few times a week and run in the local 5k and 10k stuff.
shin splints are normal and something you're just going to have to deal with. better shoes can help but your calves basically need to adapt to the stress you put on it. think about it, you're applying your bodyweight, plus force of your strike and speed which is a lot of stress over say 30 minutes, yeah it's gonna hurt lol. running 10-20km a week probably won't kill your joints either unless you are just heavy af and have pre-existing issues.

Probably the worst form of exercise there is

Over the last 20 years we have new findings definitively showing that it actually negatively impacts the cardiovascular system on a cellular level

I would suggest swimming/jumping rope; otherwise enjoy having knee & back surgeries in 10 years like the vast majority do

In b4 we all are different and some folks have *cartilage and discs* that can survive the pounding, go figure.
degrading cartilage is gonna degrade( for certain bodies), discs that flatten are gonna flatten( in certain bodies).

well i got some great news. Long distance, slow running won't make you look like a marathoner, but it does have plenty of unique benefits. And sprinting does not grow endurance, it just peaks what endurance you have.

I started running about two years ago, so I was 28. Not really "late" in life, but whatever.

I had to reset all my lifts down to lower weights when I started running so I didn't injure myself. Always do a dynamic warmup/foam rolling before and stretching/foam rolling after. It was hardest on my feet/calves and hips.

Just took my time and worked up to longer runs and faster runs. Took me about 8 months for my body to adapt. Oh, and I cut about 15 lbs because running is killer on the joints. Don't have any pain, so I did okay.

Only doing 10 or so miles a week, nothing crazy. I still lift heavy and I'm walking on concrete floors at work. Gonna try to increase my miles this summer.

I do SLD (Slow Long Distance), 75 - 100 miles a month.

I had been riding a bike in my late 40s - to early 50s but I realized that it took more hours than running to get the same result cardio-wise. (though different muscles used bodybuilding-wise...)

So in my late 50s, I changed my mind and started jogging instead.

I jog waterfront(riverside/seashore) with great scenery, listening to audiobooks.

Sometimes I can't quit it when listening to the best part of the story so jog extra miles in order to listen to it more.

You can control the intensity/volume/frequency of running according to your goals.

So I recommend it,Better Late Than Never.

Good luck!
