Real talk:
get fitted for the best shoes that you can afford
download a 1 hour mix or music compilation with faster beats.
better to be too cold than too hot so dress accordingly
find a scenic park or runners area so that you can enjoy the sites
buy runners socks, to remain blister free

Just run, take it easy on your calves at first if you haven't run in a long time

Run with good form to avoid injuries and perform better

Sprints can fit a lot of cardio into a much shorter time as well

It feels best when you push through the pain barrier and your endorphins are flowing

Just getting your body used to running again can take time so would focus on that

yeah shin splints and calf cramps are my normal issues. does that probably mean I need more cushioned shoes? or shoes for people who pronate? or wat?

That store puts you through a laser and running gait analysis to determine which shoes to try on.
It isn't just the popular well known brands, it is about how your foot strikes.
We just did it for her last week and it was correct.
Oh and tell them about shin splints and calf cramps.
good luck and enjoy!

The calves have not yet adapted to the stress

Just give it time to heal and do stretches before you run again, you don't want to cause an injury by running while it's cramped, but your body will adapt over time

Get barefoot-style minimalist shoes. They help you run as you were intended to. Putting a huge amount of padding under your heel encourages you to strike the ground first with your heel, rather than your forefoot. Running like that sends a heavy impact straight up your leg to your knees.

Watch some videos on barefoot/minimalist running on Youtube if you want to learn more.

Used to run 5 miles a day for years but fell out of love with it around 25/26 but I think i'll get back into it as I age. Im 31 now and still really enjoy resistance training at the moment and running really used to effect my gains. Sure you can eat enough but it would effect my effort in the gym. But pros of running: runners high, calorie expenditure, my v02 max was tremendous and my vascularity/veins were at an all time high.

I've tried getting into it and it is just too boring and monotonous

I much prefer hiking as imo it has all the benefits except they you typically can't start your hike once you out step outside the front door, I have to drive somewhere first

Yea idk man. I've been running off-and-on my whole life & I'm about to turn 28. My body does NOT handle running as well as it used to. I jog a few miles a few days per week and occasionally do some higher intensity stuff, but even at my age, the ol' joints don't handle it like they used to and my gym performance takes a hit. I also do stunt work/parkour that involves flipping/falling/jumping of all kinds, so that also plays a major role in my case, but you might wanna try something with lower impact.

I currently run in the following:

Hoka one-one mach profly: these have a rocker design built into the mid-sole. Just like what a rocking horse sits on, so your feet move super smooth through a rocking motion when you strike. I like them for speed.

Hoka rincon 3: very light wait yet the sole is sturdy. Nice and firm around the foot and ankle and offers support without it being too much.

Newbalance fresh foam 1080: very soft with a lot of support. Nice for long runs. Not as tight around the foot or ankle so taking turns can mean your foot can move inside the shoe, making sharp turns feel less stable.

Have run in but no longer do:

Nike lunarklons: used to be my favorite shoe but they modified the design on them years ago.

Asic gel-Nimbus 22: garbage shoe imo. Worst shinsplints of my life and I was well conditioned when they developed.

I'm a bigger, heavier runner (6'2 217lbs atm). I lift as much as I run so I will never be as efficient as the cross country runners I see out there, and I'll never be a mass monster but I enjoy both forms of training too much to favor one over the other.

X-trainer ben has given you good advice. Take it.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

I used to run 25 miles a week and ran 3 half marathons before I got the C. I really need to build back up again. But spending an hour a day running is such a big time commitment.

-go slow/most of your runs should be at a lowheart rate
-slowly ramp up mileage
-after a few months of ramping up mileage (including deloads) do a proper training program that starts introducing harder runs.

Certain adaptations only occur at low heart rates, and it helps prevent injury (it takes a while for your tendons to strengthen)

I just run 20 minutes every other day

I alternate days between lifting and running so I’m usually active 7 days a week

Getting lean is mostly diet + weights but I feel like cardio helps just that little extra bit. Also it feelsgoodmane to walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like you’re dying. I just feel healthier and more athletic when I’m running regularly and I swear it makes my skin better too

that's not really building endurance, it's just "peaking" whatever aerobic base you already have.

Running used to be my favourite "Forget about chit for 1 hour" activity. I could jog at a decent page for 1 hour, no breaks on a whim, even at 3am. I also took up trail running as I only lived a 2 hour bus ride from mountains after leaving the UK. And did a lot of running day to day just to be on time for work, which kept up my sprinting capacity. When younger I was a pretty decent runner, but didn't do it habitually and was also really skinny with thick legs. That probably helped.

But covid resulted in remote work, no mountain trips to avoid public transport, and general laziness. I'm back to running as I put on weight and want to lose it, and I've added jump rope. I went from having the fitness of a 25 year old, probably more around 29/30 now.
Into- Mountaineering, running & Djent/Progressive music.
Anti- Lack of accountability. Censorship, fat acceptance, & current wave feminism. That's why I left the UK.
PRs: Highest mt. - 2962m (Zugspitze), Longest day hike - 70km.

Do eraser sprints (short sprints) instead of long distance running. Increases muscle mass, test, and much more beneficial all around. Just look how running backs, wide receivers, sprinters are built compared to the guy on the cover of marathon

Well if he selects a good high school track( good cushion) he can work on speed 100 meters, 800 meters or a 5k, it is all up to him after he sorts out the calf/shin stuff.
