That’s around $2000 then I have $2000 left for the month let’s say I’m missing $500 somewhere in there another $1500 left and I need to save at least $1000 per month for a house down payment

Plus I should be getting a yearly bonus of 8%
$2K (and that’s a VERY generous $2K) will get burnt crazy fast living on your own.

Furniture, household consumables, cell phone, internet, etc. All coming out of that $2K.

Girlfriend you say? Lol, huge money pits.
Fishing addiction? Lol, gear / bait / etc, more money pits.

Are you even considering the other costs associated with owning a vehicle besides the monthly payment? Insurance / gas / maintenance?

I find dropping money on a pricey car to be a useless and unnecessary expense honestly (regardless of your income)

rather take my car payment and spend it on other things

If you cant afford the car CASH, dont buy it.

But huurrrr durrrr 0% interest! Hey dumbass, theres a lot more to the cost of ownership than your 'payment'... Brakes, oil, tires, headlights, etc.... By paying cash you are buying in the correct league.

One more post in favor of listening to Dave Ramsey, and followingallof his advice (it doesn't work in pieces). Everything I wish I'd known 30 years ago... "The Ramsey Show" podcast can get you started. "Total Money Makeover" book is only $10 right now.
https://www.ramseysolutions.com/dave...y-7-baby-steps

The results: bought my last two cars in cash, paid off the home in 4.5 years, completely debt-free for the past 4 years. Finished up my degree debt-free with employer tuition assistance and cash-flowing the other costs.

Debt is a form of slavery. The borrower is servant to the lender is a proverb.

When I was in my 20's and 30's I had top of the line luxury cars. Now I could afford a Bentley but drive a 2008 Cadillac with 198k miles. Get a good mechanic and a beater. Only finance assets that increase in value.

I love old Chevy pickups, and I'll defend dailying them until my last breath lol. Square bodies (73-87, up to 91 certain models) can still be had for a decent price and still run, drive and stop. I bought my diesel for 2k, it has ugly paint and dents, but is one hell of a runner after some fluid and filter replacements. Once I fix up the gasser, I'll be working on this for paint and a mild makeover. I'll make a thread about it in the future.

73-79 Ford pickups are great too, don't really like any after that lol. Those can get expensive real quick because they're no where near as plentiful as Chevys of those years. Dodge pickups are even harder to find, might be a PITA to find one for sale, much less to find parts. Japanese compact pickups from the 80's and 90's are awesome, but good luck finding anyone stupid enough to sell them for a cheap price. If they are, it's probably not worth buying.

Old trucks leak and suck down gas, but will do just about anything you need out of it and not bitch about it.

I honestly tried not to laugh. Can you somehow swing this? Maybe, but doubt it. I sure as fuk wouldn't. One accident or unexpected expense will completely screw you. Did you check your insurance rate on a brand new Tacoma? Annual registration? Taxes after purchase?

I make more than $70k a year, my mortgage is less than your studio, and I have no other debt and I'm not sure I want a new vehicle payment, but I am on the frugal side. I even have cash to buy it. Can I afford it? Absolutely. But buying a new vehicle that depreciates thousands a year is a bad move, worse when you have other bad debt. Your money is often better spent on a future investment like the house you want.

Trust me. Buy a beater truck for fishing and abuse it for a few years. Get the down payment saved for the house. Then re-evaluate everything in a couple years. Salary could go up by then too.

Dont do it. Instead use the 400$ monthly for something like an emergency fund, pay down student loans, investments or a future house downpayment.

Listen to the Misc and avoid debt if at all possible!

I kept what you mentioned about the old pickup trucks in mind today, I was at the Toyota dealership and the best deal they gave me on a 22 Tacoma was 394 lease to buy and I said have a nice day. My dad is gonna look at this 1998 Toyota Tundra T100 tomorrow for me and offer 3-4K on it. I actually like the way it looks way more than modern cars and im gonna run it into the ground if he gets it for me tomorrow hopefully it runs smoothly

Yep I’m looking at a sick 1998 tundra right now I took everything that everyone today said and walked out of the dealership today thank god I made this thread earlier and had it piled on by everyone or I think I would’ve drove off the lot with the lease to buy $394 a month option lmao. The beater tundra looks sick too looks like a classic vehicle and I really want it I’m nagging my dad to not be stubborn about it tomorrow he’s kinda cheap and I don’t want him to low ball it

Buy a car cash. Double the payments on your student loan.

Why add another 45k debt? That means you'll be 70k in the hole.

There's no way you can pay student loans and a car payment + rent, while saving for a house. Your saving won't do anything at that point. Inflation will leave you in the dust and expenses wreck your cash flow. So you'd either need to get your salary up quick, which is pretty difficult, or eat **** for a year and get rid of that student loan debt. You'd be surprised how much unexpected stuff you have to pay for over a year you didn't really calculate in.
Gas is also $6/gallon. So op can expect another $300/month on top of the loan. That's easily $700/month.

Great decision. Props and reps all around.

The Tundra should be similar to the Tacoma when it comes to cheap parts and ease to fix, but those aren't necessarily my space. I do know the Toyota forums are typically very helpful though.

I see all these Brand new vehicles on the road and I’m like how much do these people make wtf? Median salary for household is like 55k and they are driving brand new F150 and I can’t even afford a tacoma how does that make sense lol
Bro you can find an older used truck for like 12,000. Don't buy a new or newer vehicle. They're such a waste of money. If you get a new/newer truck, you probably won't be paying less than 400/month. That's 4800/year on the low end. You could buy an older vehicle and if any repairs are needed, you'll be way ahead of spending 400/ month on a car payment unless catastrophic engine/tranny failure happens.

Even in catastrophic engine failure happened, you can replace the engine for 5k (I know because I did this 2 years ago). You could literally replace the engine on your old truck once a year for the same price as a car payment. Hint: You're not going to be replacing the engine yearly. It's FAR cheaper to buy an older truck. Don't create a tight financial situation for yourself.

Tbh the used market is so bad right now that he's probably better off just getting the new Tacoma. They almost don't deprecate, and anything used is gonna be a pile of trash he's gonna have to pay 2 to 3 times more than he would have pre-lockdowns.

Dear OP:

I make $176k base salary and more like $250k-$300k including stock and bonuses, and have no debt besides my home. My wife also makes a bit over $90k/yr.

I drive a paid off 2012 F150 XLT with 145k miles. Get the fuk outta here with a brand new Tacoma in your situation. That would be straight up idiotic.

Stay poor folks.

Don't get a new truck, those are the worst vehicles you can buy in todays market, srs. Everyone and their mother wants one since they are now seen as the new status vehicle on top of the vehicle shortage these days. If you want an all around Rig just get yourself a Gx 470.

Yea I decided not to do it, what do you do? Sales?
