Definitely not looking forward to tax season. It doesn't get automatic taken out of your paycheck. You have to fill out forms for it later, and it's not uncommon for fishermen to be in debt tens of thousands, or even a hundred thousand dollars or more.

Many of my friends went to Alaska to work on Fishing boats. All came back two years later broke saying Alaska has alot of false advertising and chitty people. Many men move up there on rumors of big money and work, but find themselves living a lower middle class life with unjustified dangerous outdoor work for the pay surrounded by tradies of the sea. You sound more capable then my friends, but be careful.

I Actually never ate at Grand Aleutian. I did meet a skipper who introduced me to my skipper at the Norwegian rat across the street. When were you at Unalaska? I heard it use to be pretty crazy years ago.

cool man, I'm a recreational lobsterman . its work for sure at least for us hauling traps by hand, I would switch careers if i could make 100k hauling traps and helping out idk if they make that kinda money in maine. bet going out real far and separating all the catch all day sucks balls. i catch 40 crabs and 5 lobsters in a trap and taking out all the crabs in one trap sucks bad and rec only can have 5 traps, i keep the crabs but damn 30 crabs+ sucks and most are short ugh. just pulled traps today 0 legal keepers prob 100+ crabs

i suppose but ive been nailing stripers on tubes since trying it out . lol caught like 10+ today not even trying . i used to use bait like squid, bunker, clams and whatnot but trolling tubes with bloodworm piece is seeming more effective so im sold on that for now

It's mind-blowing that that's the case. A deckhand on my boat had -4$ in his bank account before we got paid. When I asked how that's even possible if he's making so much money, he replied that he had a trip to Vegas and bought a lot of music on the apple store lmao.

Hauling halibut using the hauler and crucifier is the most dangerous and toughest job on the boat. You're cutting and scraping fish, sorting tubs of line, dealing with a line under tens of thousands of pounds force covered in hooks that will eventually catch your hands, if you're seriously unlucky, you'll lose fingers. It really is insane. I don't know about how it is working with traps, which we just call "pots"

that's pretty intense , didn't know you were doing halibut . that's good eating at least, keep us updated on the crab situation if you do that line of work. we call them pots here too lol either or is fine

my old coworker would go do commercial salmon fishing in alaska every summer for like 2 months. Usually made like 30k IIRC.

that work is hard af. I could not do it, no shame in admitting it.

Haven’t been in about a decade. I’m in Construction Management, so used to travel extensively throughout Alaska during the late 90’s - late 2010’s. Based out of Kodiak from 2007-2017.

Not sure if places have changed, or if I changed. But definitely was crazier times 20 years ago, but also may be a function of I was crazier back then too.

Always fun nights in fishing town bars when all the commercial boats come in and the boys have tons of cash!
