open layoffs: bookstore chain [held by a corporation w/multiple companies] was shut down because the company was purchased by another corporation that didn't want to be in the book business- went from expanding and opening new stores to "going out of business" and work through the closing to get a little severance

sneaky layoffs: securities broker-dealer was purchased by a big bank and we had a rah rah feel good meeting + a "welcome celebration" before the layoffs started- I was cut in the third round and my boss told me a couple of weeks before the official layoff date because she wanted me to complete a bunch of work before I left

efficiency/cost cutting layoffs: company my ex worked for was purchased by a European corporation; he was doing well there and had just received a good raise- they laid off anyone who was paid above their predetermined salary range so he lost his job after getting a great review and a pay increase

Well that’s what doesn’t make sense. We were booming. Had so much work we could barely keep up and this company too over. They instantly started stealing our equipment and rerouting stuff that made no sense. We were losing customers left and right. They started blowing money on stupid stuff like it made no sense. Now we barely have work and they lay us off. I like my part time job but it’s hard to find a full time job to be able to do both. I’m gong to try and work multiple shifts there and wait a few weeks to see what may happen but if not I guess I’ll have to find anything

Well I can tell you why the company got sold/bought out and why you got canned. Not saying I'm for it or you deserve it, but it's what it is.

So company is doing great as far as doing lots of business, has lots of accounts, assets, netowrks, all of that. Company brings in a lot of money, but the only thing is that payroll is sucking the profits away. It's almost impossible to get rid of a Union but there is a way, and that is if the company goes bankrupt, is bought/sold, taken over. In this time when it's hard to find people, letting people go especially in that field is a costly, and productivity costing move, but in the long run they will come out ahead.
