The stupid price he paid for Twitter (lol at Elon) did nothing but massively increase the debt, debt service, and weaken the balance sheet of twitter. All of these ridiculous layoffs do nothing but offset the gigantic debt he has to service and today's low low rates (lol). Twitter never made money and likely never will particularly saddled with the debt Elon has foisted on them.
His only option will soon be to keep it public and sell shares. Which will lower the price per share and start a downward spiral unless he can come up with an effective model to make a chit ton of money. Anyone who thinks what Elon is doing is normal business or good business, well, just don't try to aspire to more than stopping at your local mart to pick up your ciggies, scratchies, monster, and skoal.

He needs new revenue because advertisers are and will bail. And if you think he can just cut 50% of the staff while implementing new tech and changing the paradigm of the business, well you're a cultist so you probably do. I get it because when I drive past your work space I always think to myself, WTF are half the tradies standing around while only half are kinda working? I bet you could cut half of those tradies...

Don't forget, Elon tried to back out and they wouldn't let him. So is this really their own fault.
The world will be a better place because of it, though. Esp now that Kathy Griffin is silenced. That right there was worth $44 billion.
Edit:
FYI, I was laid off from a job after new management came in and they asked for me to come back and I was given a 20% raise. The funny thing is I even told the Director that laid me off he was making a mistake and he just shrugged me off. They laid him off and hired me back. lolz.

With advertising revenue being massively slashed right now, you'd likely need to start thinking about cash flow in the interim. Plenty of companies go under due to cash flow issues, not being able to service current payroll and debts despite revenue coming in the future.

Plus he's acting like a nutjob lately. Tweeting, deleting tweets, laying people off, calling them back, saying he'd unban people, then not unbannng people.
Elon is scrambling I think. But he's a smart dude so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for a bit. Plus I'm interested in what he can turn Twitter into.

I’d argue that is even more of a boss move than founding the company yourself.
