Article is exactly right. Accountants are the tradies of the business world, they provide a necessary function but they represent the lowest rung of the professional ladder.
FP&A is where it's at in the business world if you're not going to be something elite like an investment banker. Here in Maryland we start young folks with just a couple years experience at $80k. My highest paid analyst makes $150k. And Maryland while being a rich state isn't a particularly crazy high COL state like Cali or NY. The work hours aren't bad either, 45 a week or so other than budget/board prep time where it's like 55 hours for a month or two.
You make business decisions based on both operational and financial information and are looked at as an authority in the organization. Ops folks deliver data on demand and you regular work with executive leadership like me.
Accounting not even once.

A good friend in HS did very well with his accounting courses at the University he attended. He had all As. The University had his name placed upon a wall of fame for the University accounting graduates. After a year of working at a big accounting firm found he didn't care much for the boring work. He ended up going to law school where today he is a lawyer that specializes in accounting tax work.

Accounting is horrible.
If you are going to do a career that is not financial advisory (financial advisory= IBD, SnT, Asset Mgmt with the goal of working in a HF or PE eventually), the only thing finance wise in corporate should be FPnA, which is very related almost as boring but does have some strategy stuff especially if you are in Corporate Development. Not sure if an accountant can exit into a Corporate Dev role when the competition is FPnA people plus IBD-ers who hate IBD and/or cant get into PE.
Accounting, whether in Big 4 or Corporate, is subhuman. Transactional services / Deal Advisory at MAX only if used as a stepping stone to IBD; srs
Strategy Consulting in true strategy (big 4 strat houses or MBB etc) is much more interesting because you have the variety and your life does not revolve around an excel model.
Disclaimer: obviously, do not confuse true strategy consulting with some bull**** finance consulting or economics consulting from a retarded bloated Big 4

Investment banking is much better than consulting, no competition. If you’re going to have a stressful job, at least pick the path that makes significantly more money
Consulting is fine as a short term gig before laterally transferring into industry, but I promise it’s not the field you are imagining it to be in your post

This is true even for entering non-executive top business roles, such as Product Managers in Big Tech.
Obviously, I wont pretend a Chief Financial Officer has never succeeded as a CEO; Or that sometimes the FPnA is embedded within the dedicated strategy team (because it is true - financial info matters).
But FP&A is definitely where it is at in the business world, especially as a start.

I’ve never lead a financial statement audit but I know enough about it that it’s not what’s described in the article
Much of it is looking at the internal and external controls on fraud and other gaps in assurance that could lead to a misstatement on the annual report
Not “balancing cash statements” or whatever the phuck this article claimed

Having said that i would not recommend anyone get accounting degree to do accounting ... its not worth it slaving away in big 4 , having to get two degrees or a masters to even be qualified to sit for a CPA test (need 150 credit hours), going through hell to pass cpa, only to make 100k ish after spending 3-4 years working 70 hours for 50k at big 4...not to mention you are doing boring ass accounting work.

I work with people who have CPA's that charge $100-150 to plug peoples numbers into a tax program during tax season.
it's their side gig because their current job pays more than being an actual accountant.
i also know people with accounting degree's that took the class and sit in those giant rooms H&R block opens up to do peoples taxes for a fee.
they make decent money doing that also.
have never actually met someone who is an accountant for a living.
