When egg producers are crying and having to sell off their chickens, then i will consider buying eggs again.

Its a plot to remove a cheap protein source and replace it with cereal and other terrible unhealthy foods.

Dont fall for it. Replace them with other proteins.
why replace them at all?

The buy in cost and maintence of backyard chickens is significantly more expensive than buying eggs. Only way it makes sense from a purely economic point is to have a large enough yard with enough natty foliage that you spend exactly $0 feeding them. Egg laying breeds arent the same as food breeds and you'll never reproduce them fast enough to account for a familes chicken intake. Once a rooster is introduced the egg laying dynamic changes too. Crunch your numbers, good chance you are paying 2-5x store price for those eggs, srs. This is coming from someone who had chickens for 4 years and only stopped due to predation. Its almost never cheaper, but its wholesome as fuk.

Interesting. I wonder how that changes if youre making enough eggs to sell to others. If theres a sweet spot.

But also I would do it just for the fact I know what the chickens are eating, and how healthy my eggs would be.

Hopefully your local power provider jacks up your electricity 10x this year. You can write them letters congradulating them on their buisness savy! But dont fret, you'll just build a windmill, shell out $20,000 for solar panels and or build a hydro electric dam in your backyard. Its not like you HAVE to buy electricity from them. If I just type out free market I can ignore blatant price gouging, corption and plain evil. Today its eggs, tomorrow its water and gas...then what?

I had 8 hens. They laid 6-8 eggs daily at their peak, averaged 5ish year round. Thats more eggs than I can eat, so I gave them away to neighbors or used egg heavy recipes. The yokes are a deeper orange and taste better, you can actually taste the difference and see it too. However, if you buy food for them your cost will be greater than store bought. If you have a yard big enough for them to scratch and peck with enough protein sources, its possible to essentially let them go in your yard, give them a place to sleep/lay eggs and collect eggs free of charge. However, they will all be torn to shreds at 3am by (insert half a dozen local predators) and those racoons, yotes, fox, eagles/hawks, cats, stray dogs, bears whatever will keep coming back once they find a free food source thats semi trapped. Most people who have backyard chickens (HAD) backyard chickens until one night...

I remember before I really ever put any critical thinking into my political positions, I use to think free market bro. Capitalism bro. Trickle down economics bro.

Its not even a left vs right issue. But the billionaires sure as fukk made it into one. Recucklicans bought it hook line and sinker. Then somehow even got liberals to buy into it.

I would never bro, I was mixing sarcasm with insults to point out a flaw in your logic. Devils avacado is cool and all, but when the logic is backwards it comes off as retardation.

I'm kinda with you, there are grey areas. If Toy R US changes the price of plastic cars from $5 to $50, then stop buying plastic cars. But what about food, and what about food staples like flour or salt? Some things need to get bought and its the governments job to step in when needed to regulate that price. Thats whole messy can of worms that leads to commie land, but some aspects of it are needed to keep the greedy merchants in check.

Im 100% anti commie liberal hippy fukks. But which has fukked us all over more in the last 50 years? Commies or rampant capitalism? I mean culturally commies which will have further long lasting problems in our country. But from day to day real life, not internet arguments deff out of control capitalism.

My opinion is more nuanced than I have presented it. It's interesting to get miscers talking by rocking the boat a bit.

On the one hand business is business. But, you're not wrong. An end product is one thing, but commodities are different and should be treated differently. I don't think there is evil afoot.

Definitely a messy situation and I'm glad I don't have a hand in regulation. Lots of parties to please and you can't please em all.

I won't use 4-6 eggs a day so I give many of them away. I'm the same way with the beer I brew. I really don't drink too often. I'm lucky if I have 1 beer a week, so I end up giving it to my friends and family and they get to have stuff I make for free. Nice deal for all, I guess. I love the experience and learning and they get free homemade stuff.

Highly recommend though, brah. It's really not daunting at all. Hens basically take care of themselves. In the summer I let them roam and they follow me around the entire property as I've raised them since they were young so I'm like their alpha coq. They'll squat when they see me as a sign of submission.

This is a fair point so I wouldn't want to mislead people. I'll admit, I do it more because, as you said, it's like living harvest moon IRL than savings. However, I remember calculating that it ends up being more profitable for me to own chickens in the long run. It's an investment up front but if you can build your own coop you're on your way. I spent 800$ on my coop. Hens are 15$ a piece. I don't spend more than 25$ a month on feed. I don't have issues with predators. I also feed them spent beer grain as treats.

It's maybe a 1000$ investment up front. So yes, that's a schit load of eggs. Given that a dozen here is easily 6$, that's 166 dozens or so purchased until it's profitable. That's a lot of friggin' eggs.

There is a fine line between a rise and gouging, gouging is when folks get loud and ask for congressional investigations.
