I ate a durian in the middle of a malaysian jungle while a crowd of locals stood around watching. Held a king cobra in Thailand. Rented a motorcycle and cruised all around Belize. Ate at "the fish pond" which was just a pond outside some dude's house where he catches the fish and immediately cooks it. Had a fight with a bunch of monkeys in India trying to grab my stuff. Good times.

Worst part is probably finding a place to take a dump. Lord help you, clean bathrooms just don't exist in many places.

those aren't really dangerous countries

Dangerous = South America, Caribbean, Africa, some Middle East, few others.

And exploring villages/countryside is amazing. It's usually the big cities in these countries that are dumps for the most part. I guess you could say the same thing about America.

I've traveled to like 20 islands in the Caribbean and you HAVE to be really safe. I wouldn't travel solo there like I do now. I was with my husband, then.

Grenada was really scary as tourists were robbed by men with machetes on the beach. In Granada they were having political unrest and a group of black men surrounded me and told my husband they wanted to take me back in 1999. It was really scary and luckily some others from our cruise (not a large cruise ship, but a small boat) came over to save me!

I loved Aruba the most. I've always wanted to go to St. Lucia.

I went on a cruise with a bunch of family a few years ago. One of the islands we went to was Barbados. Parts of it were absolutely beautiful. But we went on a tour to Rhiana's neighborhood that she literally grew up in. It was legit 3rd world status. Then they took us to a $20 million dollar pent house on the ocean she has for when she visits back home. Mind was blown. A real rags to riches story. Bless u mami.

St Martin was the most beautiful of all. Its owned by the French and Netherlands though.

Have been all over the Carribbean and can confirm, don't leave the resort. Grand Cayman is okay because it's English but expensive as hell. Cubans don't generally mess with tourists and because of the government they know to stay in their lane. St. Maarten is still Euro controlled so is again relatively well protected and Barbados is mostly still English as well.

But why would you ever go off site? You're there to relax on a beach, not "soak up the culture". What culture are you looking for? Oh wow, a market where the vendors will try to scam you. Or a fort where they talk about how it sat there for three hundred years and never saw any battles because nobody wanted the island. Or a local farm where poor people make cigars or coffee that you buy in a store. Wow.

Every tropical country apart from USA, Australia and Singapore is a 3rd world chithole. The rest of the US holds the tropical places (Hawaii/island territories) up and well if Europeans never settled Australia they'd be no civilization there whatsoever. There is some correlation. Is it merely the weather? Possibly most Northern Europeans/Americans/Canadians slave away most of the year to spend 2 weeks in the nice weather doing nothing. If you're already there what motivation is there?

Honestly as a tourist you won’t go anywhere near the sketchy areas. We go to St Maarten every year and go around the entire island no issue. It’s for sure more commercial than the others but you’re not going to go waltzing into the local favela.

Just don’t go to Haiti or leave the tourist zones in places like the DR

Went to Africa when I was a kid and our group was touring around Harare. A few times I strolled away from the tour group, zero fuks. Probably was kind of a stupid as I was like 15 but there were soldiers with guns on every corner so didn't see any crime. Creepy street guy asked me if he could have my shoes. I stuck close to the tour group after that.

Worst place I ever really went to was the Paris metro back in the 90s. Pickpockets, kidfukkers, gypsies, druggies, dirtbag cops all over the place. Even with a tour group we weren't safe. Hopefully the recent cultural enrichment revolution has made it more tolerable lol.

Don't wear a watch crew. First time traveling to the Caribbean for me. Chalk it up to naivety; there were so many resorts and big name resorts that I just assumed it was a safe country. I probably won't even leave the resort at this point. Would love to take a boat tour viewing the Pitons, but may cancel that idea.

Legit have no desire to go to local markets. I wanted to do **** like a deep sea fishing excursion, a catamarn tour of the pitons, visit sugar beach, check out the sulfur springs; all of that requires hailing a shuttle and traveling on road where rival gang violence has spilled into the streets.

Although an old ass fort would be cool, but they don't have **** like that there. That's why I'd go to Dry Tortuga for that.
