I can't say I'd bother watching more than a couple episodes of any old sitcoms besides Cheers, but I'd absolutely put 80s family sitcoms on for my kids. They hit age 12 I'll go further back with All in the Family and Sanford and Son. Age 16 we can watch The Sopranos together.

Yes they were terrible and it was only in the very late 80s that shows like Simpsons and Married with Children started pushing back at all the Cosby Show/Alf/etc abominations and opened the way for the huge 1990s rennaisance.

The reason is that there were hardly any channels, and the goal of all of them was to win a huge proportion of the population who were watching TV between 7:30 and 8:30 each night. Because this audience included a lot of easily offended people, they had to make sitcoms with the primary goal of offending nobody. It had to be positive, feel good, uncontroversial, inoffensive, and everything else that prevents humour from coming through.

80s and 90s were the GOAT years of television. If you don't think so, just look at all the shows back then getting re-boots of themselves.


Television studios are milking the nostalgia juice re-creating shows from the 80s and 90s because they were that good.

I don't remember watching TV all that much in the 80s. there were 3 main channels, that didn't have much to watch on them. I remember watching Cheers, Newhart, Mork and Mindy, the Cosby Show, and probably a few others from time to time.

Wouldn't say everything. As I said earlier, the 1980s had some really solid movies. Cars, music & television were most certainly garbage though. 80s music aged very poorly; far worse than any other decade. I get the feeling that many in this thread are unable to have an objective view on this topic because they lived through the 80s, and as a result, have attached all that crappy music & television to treasured memories that they still hold very fondly.

Of course 80s music is still being listened to. That holds true with every decade, partner. At least every decade since music has become recordable. Can you at least acknowledge that music took a massive fall in the 80s? After the high points of the 60s & 70s, there was a clear dropoff in the 80s. A clear droppoff in the 80s, then a slight boost in the 90s.....are you able to accept that, my friend?

And I don't watch too much newer television or listen to newer music, so I can't really speak on how today's stuff will be viewed in twenty years. I watch a lot of old stuff though. I watch a lot of old stuff, and I know that most of the 80s shows listed in this thread were tolerable at best, horrendous at worst. Only a couple of good ones in there. I don't know what happened with television in the 80s, but I'm so glad it didn't stink up the 90s too much. Very thankful for that.
