from the couple vids posted here on misc he seems like an articulate well versed guy, great at debating

he seems to have found his way to riches in catering to the masses now so you can't blame him

you can't be a professor and some self help/motivating guru at the same time, he chose the latter because there's much more money in it but of course academics is where true honor from society is to be gotten

His psychology advice ismostlypretty mainstream, evidence-based stuff with a little of his own flavour geared towards the disaffected male community. He does go into Jungian psychobabble at times which has gotten him a lot criticism from more academic/published psychologists, but on the whole his self help content isn't bad per se.

When he starts talking politics and other topics he is turbo cringe and anyone who takes his opinion seriously should reevaluate their life. His "debate" with Zizek on Marxism was an embarrassment - guy actually thought that reading the Manifesto the night before provided a sufficient understanding of Marx. Even when he talks about Christianity you can just tell he has absolutely no idea what the **** he is talking about (the conversation with William Lane Craig being an example) and just fills space with the sound of his own voice.

Why do people always make comments like this as if people can only choose one reason for doing something. He obviously cares about helping people otherwise he wouldn’t have become a psychologist. He wouldn’t have become a professor because there are lots of other fields he could’ve entered to make more money. So now he genuinely tries to help people and make money at the same time. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes. He also attempted to juggle teaching with his many other endeavors for a long time, and now he and his daughter are working on setting up a college where people can get a degree for only $4,000. I know a lot of his haters will say that’s just for more money, but again there are tons of things he could be doing to make more money than trying to offer degrees at such a low cost. He is clearly driven in large part by helping people, so if he makes money along the way to increase his reach then that’s all good in my book. The world needs more people like him.

For someone who talks so high & mighty like he has all of life's problems figured out - then had to check himself into rehab because he cant stop himself from scarfing down the benzos just LOL.

There are far better and more valid reasons to criticise Peterson than his own personal issues with drug addiction

I've heard some of his stuff. He's definitely bringing up good points and asking important questions. He's essentially become a martyr at this point. He does come across as a bit arrogant, though. Like he genuinely enjoys the attention he's getting. But still, he's asking important questions and values free speech and open dialogue. It's just the people he attracts that are more problematic. Probably a tiny subset, much like he'd be likely to say, the 'tyranny of the minority,' but some of his frustrated male followers are pretty insufferable and warp what he's saying to fit their own agendas, much like with any social cause of group people will form.

I'm pretty sure he mentioned having started taking those meds when his wife was fighting cancer and due to the immense pressure placed on him at all times. I can see that. I don't think it means he has a lack of self-control. Benzodiazepines are incredibly addictive and can cause really nasty withdrawal symptoms when you get off them, even if you were taking them at therapeutic doses. It's a medication that's dispersed way too liberally. We also don't know the extent of his difficulty with withdrawals but he seemed to have addressed it immediately and has the money to check himself into a facility to help himself out before it spirals further.

I mean, I don't know the guy personally so I don't know his inner motivations for deviating from his path as a professor, could be he truly just wants to inspire as many people as possible and this was his way of maximizing his reach, and the money was just secondary, but you gotta admit that the further he strays away from his expertise like many mentioned ITT, the less profound he comes off (which is only logical)

all I'm doing is observing from a distance and telling it from my (limited) perspective, I'm not judging either way, and if anything it's great to listen to his way of lecturing and debating (whenhe sticks to psychology)

He has provided me with more guidance than anyone ever in my life. And I owe him gratitude for that. Even God fearing, successful professionals/ surgeons/ professors I've approached over the years for life advice, never gave anything of substance. They all did the opposite really. They hesitate and generic answers. I wonder why that is?

Refreshing to listen to, based as hell in a lot of ways. Its nice to have opposition to the woke liberal bullchit that seems to be taking over the world. They hate him, and try to cancel him at every opportunity, so you know he's on the right track.

But at the same time, he is human, and not perfect. Who is?

Like everything, you can either choose to admire him for his multiple good qualities and accept the bad, or condemn him for his negative ones and ignore the good...

definitely don't agree with everything he says but i think he means well.

His older work in his actual field, and his lecture series were quite engaging even though a lot of it was repackaged, simplified jung, and not much was really his. He did however, make it accessible to more people which is a benefit.

However, i think lately his quality has declined, especially since his illness and he's getting too caught up in the culture war rather than his own area of expertise. I still think he's a net force for good, but sometimes his takes are cringe-worthy (especially regarding international politics and what not) and his way of presenting his point is a bit dramatic.

Loved him when he first came on the scene, and I feel like he really changed things for a lot of men at first, so his impact has already been huge and good.
But I think he kinda went off the rails more recently.
Also he cries too much IMO.
