I blame whoever sent her alone.
So in other words, American police escalate the situation to deadly force by default.

Kind of.. but they don't really have a choice as guns are widespread, so they need to carry them. The mistake here was a lone female officer going up against a man.

No. Mistake was not listening to police orders, and approaching the woman against her clear order to stand down.

Most cops in other countries have guns also but they are not a first resort.

damn these cops need training in deescalation.

there's nothing that says being a cop means you can't back down and retreat. she could've walked backwards quickly and put 30 feet between him and her. not like he was some super athletic athlete...he was an overweight older homeless dude. then she calls for backup while watching to make sure he doesn't pull a gun. these cops act like backing away makes them a punk...and they signed up to be cops to show how much they wont back down.

and then she shoots him once and still refuses to back away so she shoots again?

Nah they would have done everything in their power to deescalate the situation, by having a conversation with him and backing off. Would not have sent 1 officer out alone either especially a woman.
blows my mind how bitchmade you are being in this thread. where the fuk did you get the idea the guy was completely harmless? They didn't want him sleeping there, they (the mall security) asked him to leave, he threatened them, they call the cops, he threatens the cops, he attacks the cops, they shoot him. hurr durr they should have just used their baton instead. Yeah I'm sure you feel real good turning your tail and running when someone comes after you, but the guy was a sack of human garbage and had it coming.

lol dumb mother fuker "de-escalate the situation" It was only a matter of time before he assaulted the next person who didn't like him sleeping wherever the fuk he wanted. The guy was a loose cannon and had it coming.

No.

What should’ve happened is this: she comes over and says: “what are you doing here? “ If he doesn’t immediately give her a coherent answer, followed by immediately getting his ass off the street and following her orders, she should shoot him, get back into her car and go home to sleep soundly. let the dogs eat his corpse. you give too much value to a life of some stupid scum.

Yes, the mentally ill man made mistakes. I do not disagree with that. I do believe the fatality could have been avoided by sensible policing - Not a lone woman responding. It could also have been avoided by the officer backing away but not using her weapon could also have resulted in her own death.

I do agree that the American police use their weapons unnecessarily frequently. Based on the videos i have seen online.

Dont really care what value you put on his individual life, but a cop that can't handle a homeless dude like that shouldn't be cop. there were 50 different ways to handle the situation but people that are scared at the least bit of confrontation just pull a gun and start shooting out of fear.

she did back away, telling the guy multiple times "I'm going to shoot you" and he kept pursuing. Unless you think continuing to pursue someone with a gun pointed at you is perfectly reasonable. Any other ideas how you would reason in that situation?

No. Like someone before said, it was suicide by cop. The guy asked for it.

Most male cops would've likely slung him to the ground and had his face eating pavement within 3-4 seconds.

The goal of policing shouldn't be to just randomly give people what they ask for -- it should be to ascertain a situation and handle it as reasonably as possible with no lives being lost.

you know how many police officers lives are lost because they followed your logic and hesitated to shoot a potentially dangerous unknown retard who ends up shooting them or something?

The guy clearly wanted a confrontation. She did try to reason with him at first, he threatened her, advanced on her, she threatened to shoot him, he continued, he got shot like she promised. Now people on the internet "hurr the lunatic guy deserves the benefit of the doubt"

Unless you seriously want to argue that if backup arrived beforehand the guy would have calmed down and gone quietly.

she probably would be able to leave back into her SUV had she tried. He just wanted her away from his trespassing area.

Then, some men could taze, bring dogs, etc. to arrest him.

Soon as it's clear he wants a confrontation she should back away and call for backup unless he makes a movement like he's pulling a gun or attacking someone else. Like I said, male officers have people advance on them all the time and rarely does it result in death...they would have put him on the ground and in cuffs. She's a woman so basically any non-compliance means she's shooting. She should've maintained a safe distance until he verbally calmed down and backup arrived.

What outcome do you want?

She could have retreated better and lost a little pride points then came back with more officers or she could stand her ground and assert her authority over a homeless guy. Either option is fine but if your job is to protect the public she should have handled it better.

These decisions should have been made before letting him get within 5 feet of her with her gun pointed at him. At the time of the shoot it was a good shoot, he was clearly getting close enough to knock her out and take her gun.

2/10 handling in the beginning

7/10 at the shooting

3/10 after the shooting

At least she didn't try to handcuff a dead guy or kick him in the head like some other officers would have. I like cops and respect their job but they are dumb.

Retreat. Walking towards to a cop pointing a gun is not reasonable but getting executed for it is even less reasonable. He was not attacking her he was simply walking towards her. Her gun should not even have been out.

should have taken steps backward as she saw he was approaching her with aggressive language and said sir i don't feel comfortable with you approaching me like that so i need you to stop. As she backs away to maintain distance and if he continues to approach she could pull her gun. while backing up say sir i will be forced to shoot if you continue approaching me. if he charges at her (doubt he can really move too fast) and gets too close she shoots him. if it's just a standoff at that point with her gun out...wait for backup to arrive.

i would think a situation like this would be basic training before becoming a cop.

I thought she did a good job. She was super polite and even talked calm to him. Heck I wish she would come talk to me like that when I’m down. She didn’t know what that guy had or what he was capable of. Only thing that could have been better is maybe use a taser first? I think a taser and then pepper spray to the face would keep any man down even for a petite woman. If that was your wife or gf you would be releaved she did that instead of getting stabbed and having her gun taken.

She did. He used deadly threats towards her and kept coming at her. Everyday cops are getting killed because they let this social media or blm crap get in their head. I think she did a good job. They also should keep bogus weapons on them for situations like this. He was a pos. Do you even leave your house anymore? The country is a giant pie hole. Cops is like my favorite show. There’s nothing but crazy peopje out there. They should be using drones with cameras to issue tickets now days and always have their guns drawn. Pos was coming at a female officer with intentions to harm her. She did well

She took like one step back while he was using threatening language and started to approach...then got scared and tried to maintain distance with her hand out while she went for the gun.

I'll never understand why cops are so adamant about telling people not to move while their dying. Imagine bleeding out in the street while your killer yells "dont move mutha fukker!!!"

So anyway, did he died?
