Swimming is great exercise, no doubt.

It's just too bad that doing it is always going to be at least somewhat of an ordeal unless you're a richcel with your own big personal swimming pool. Especially on a regular basis. Can you imagine getting up to go to a swimming pool at the gym several mornings a week into your 30's? It would take some dedication.

Yeah I mean swimming is probably great at building a cardio base for other sports too. And probably a good one for a couch potato to ease back into with cardio.

I agree. One of my investment properties is about 300m from a waterfront. Ideally, I'd like access to mountains, forest and freshwater lakes near my 'final' build. We're still scoping out opportunities for that heh. Though it's a tough sell to convince my wife I'd want an indoor half olympic pool with a retractable roof/facade to make it an outdoor pool in the summer...

It's easier to make one or both of the long walls full retracting sliding doors.

Ours isn't quite half olympic (it's 20m, not 25m).

Hey, catching up on the posts. Can you share any pics/plans (even in DM?) My wife and I are expecting our first kid any day now and I want to get back into swimming as I did, decades ago. Going to hire a swimming coach, last time I swam I felt 'heavy' in the water, like I was dragging a lot in freestyle. Das not it mane.

I don't really do pics.

Re a home pool, there are lots of things to consider. We bought this house at first fix stage from the receivers, but had been planning to build before that, so we looked at the pool from a lot of angles.

The main thing to consider is the footprint. An indoor pool is a lot of square footage.

Do you just go two lane to save space and energy?
Chlorine/UV/salt?
How much indoor space around the pool? A lot of indoor pool rooms use less than half the square footage for the actual pool.
The big question is single or double story? With good enough HVAC, you can incorporate the pool into the house proper, as opposed to building it as a seperate wing.

We have the pool open on one side (20m of fully rectractable doors) to a large courtyard/suntrap. Think of contemporary indoor/outdoor living in places like cali and florida, with the fully retractable glass walls. You use those on the pool room in the same way that those houses use them on the living room.

Re feeling heavy: you are probably not horizontal enough in the water (your feet are hanging low) and doubling your profile making the resistance far higher. It is usually from having your head to high, so that you can look at where the edges of the pool are, where other people are etc instead of putting your face in the water.

I reckon it would be - workout wise.

Back in the army days supremely fit.

The random pool sessions we had where we'd just swim laps continuously, holy f*ck was dying.

Thanks for the thoughts/considerations. Will probably hit the pool today and test my technique, and spoke with my wife and she is interested in the concept of a 'natural pool' - so I'll keep thinking about the eventual home setup.

Right? I remember having cardio for days in my swim days, helped with running a lot too.

Coming back to this - it seems I was raising my head too much during freestyle to breathe which dropped my feet. Now my ankles kick out of the water a bit and I'm more flat - but am practicing my catch.

Had to get new goggles too - for some reason my old ones constantly leaked.

I need to start bringing my HRM - because my watch doesn't capture my HR while lapping. Then to plan out giga-gains dead srs.

Hell yeah.

About to jump in right now. I usually do laps on my lunch when I have time.

Hope it went well! Went to scout a lapping pool near my workplace recently - there were 8 people in a lane. It was horrifying.

I want a home pool not for mogging but just the freedom to walk outside and hop in during the brutal Texas heat

Nothing beats the smell of sunscreen, tanning oil, chlorine and some cold IPA’s on a hot sunny day. God damn

Yeah, 8 per lane I probably wouldn’t even bother.

I usually get my own lane. Not too many people doing laps during lunch. It is a 50 meter pool too which is awesome for the long distance swims.

Today was productive but not great. Just coming off a four day weekend and ate like a dumpster the entire time.

Excited to go again tomorrow.

It is the highlight of my day. I love swimming.

If you want rapid VO2 max improvements, without worrying about the HRM, you can do intervals in the pool.

Do 2 lengths (as they are 25m) flat out, followed by 2 (maybe 3 or 4 until your capacity improves) slower.

Repeat as many times as you can.

The fact that you have perfectly defined distances (lengths) means that you can do all sorts of pace/interval patterns. You don't have to just do LISS.

I mean, it's reminding me of the gym. "Getting there and doing some lifts" better than rotting. I'll head to the pool again tomorrow - got my new goggles delivered - and practice some drills.

One thing it seems I need to work on is the 'cool down'. Basically I run my laps for around 30 minutes - I'm slow af, but the RPE is something like 8.5 srs. Then I hop out of the pool, shower, and head off. But my heart rate is elevated for quite a long time after and I think I need a way to 'cool off' like I do with lifting - which would be laying on my back, legs elevated in the stretching /mobility area.

I swam competitively for 15 yrs or so. It is good cardio but I would never do it again knowing how toxic public pool chlorine is. Terrible for your health. If i was rich and had my own pool, perhaps i would get back in it.

Yeah I have always incorporated a cool down aspect to my more aggressive cardio sessions. It almost feels necessary for me at times.

Laying on your helps blood flow as your heart does not have to fight gravity…is something educated people have said. I just do whatever feels good lol.

Headed to the pool in about 30 min.

That's the good thing about this class - no headshots. We go over techniques - pad work - cardio and body sparring...it's fun wothout the braindamage

It's not boxing if there's no headshots. Sorry to burst your bubble. Like what even is the point? You might as well do some soccer mom kickboxing joint.
