So, my brother was a C/O, and I applied (looked up to him) but also went to the Police Academy in 2011; I paid to go, because they weren't taking free rides unless a department sponsored you. So I pass all that, got my POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certification.

State wide hiring freeze, budget deficit, ect. Fck me. SO I worked at Wal-Mart from 2011-2014 when the CDCR hit me up, hey we want to hire you; so I did that, since it paid more than the 2 police departments who hit me up at the time did. Citrus Heights and Roseville, pay less so nah.

Free staff: Cooks, teachers, priests, counselors... they get phones in easy; give me 20 minutes and any building I got you a phone on a search. Bottom shelf burner phone is $6k right now on the tier. Is that worth it to you? Not worth it to me but to some it is.

So the tiny phones. Ever watch Zoolander? We find those from time to time.

Personally? This guy; they damn near killed him the other week. Handed him a food tray while he was on Orientation.

They opened him up WIDE, wish I could share pics but that there confidentiality. Almost opened his whole neck up though.

Why would anyone want to work corrections? Being a law man and wanting to lock ass holes up is great it protects the good people in society from the bad people in society but to want to babysit and be around a bunch of convicts and scumbags all day every day I always thought would have to be a major character flaw going on wanting to feel a sense of empowerment over others

How many criminals did you buddy up with ?

Buddy up with? Nah. But to be real, you'd be surprised how many of them are just regular guys. They fcked up, I'm not here to judge or punish, like you said, I'm here to babysit. But think about it; guy killed some people, raped someone, most common is drug offenses... you want them in the community?

I'm here to make sure they do their time, nothing more or less. I'll stop a fight, a murder, I'll write them up when they break the rules. But end of the day if no one escapes or dies, it was a good day.

Don't go?

For real though...

Don't go.

There's a reason legit prison escapes are very rare; most are 'walk aways' from less secure facilities. I'm not an electrician but I know an electric fence will kill you way more than you need.

Taxed the big bucks too, OT is 1/3 to tax off the top.

End of the day, it's my job, I'm not here to make someone miserable, hurt them or anything. I always hate that, movies make C/Os out to be cruel... nah, we just work there, I can proudly say I've never seen excessive force used, no one abuse their authority, the badge is seen as a joke but it does mean something to people, I may not like an inmate but bet your ass I will be sure he gets fed, medical, whatever he needs because it's just the right thing to do.

Haven't read through the thread, but are their any female guards/correction officers?

If so...how common is it for them to be in a relationship with a prisoner? Or have you ever known one to smash a prisoner? If that happens any repercussions?

Oh, good story on this one. Yes we have female staff.

Common for them to get with inmates? Very rare, but it happens; more often they fck coworkers.

But story...

So I walk into work one day, yard is on lockdown. Weird but it happens. No one said anything when I was walking in so I get to program to sign in for my shift, no one really says anything so fck it, I'll figure it out later, it's probably something stupid if no one is mentioning it.

Get to the building I am in for the day, and the person I normally releive isn't there. Ok, hey, where is she?

"Oh, hey, this is weird but they walked her off, I don't know why"... well that's fcking weird too.

Found out she snuck a phone in for an inmate, and was sexting him. The inmates cell mate got jealous and ratted on them. Guess she was fcking him in the supply closet but wouldn't fck the cellie.

That was an odd day.

She wasted a 20ish year career on some dck... all because that was where she found attention.

I have seen it though, not at the time but when people were fired. It feels so bad, seeing someone you trusted, were friends with, ate with.... and they weren't who you thought they were. That feeling of betrayal, that I should have noticed it, something.... it hits hard. They put other people in danger for money, I've fought inmates who were high, sht isn't fun and knowing they brought in something, nah, fck them. They are not my family anymore, not my partner, not my friend... they lost that.

The funny thing is, is that it the people that you would least expect. I have know a few people that I used to work with in Folsom that ended up getting busted, and these were some people that I used to hang out with outside of work ect.... Straight up seemed like solid dudes but next thing you know I hear they got busted.

A lot of OGs, even I remember, when it was me and you going under the stairs to work sht out. No alarms, no BS, just me and you man to man; Not always inmates, I have been punched in the face by more partners than inmates and it's not even close. Deserved it every time either way.

The guy who dropped my address, I guess I pissed him off because I found a few phones in his cell on a random search; legit random too, I have to do 6 per day as a building officer and well, fck, here's some phones. He took it personal, came up to me when I was at the podium and said "My Address, we know". Fck me, I just said "Well, hope your people like breathing, because they're getting a few new holes."

I have should have reported it, but nah, that's a lot of paper work and this guy was (so far) full of sht on anything happening.

As far as interesting conversations, I could go on all day; how someone used to hide bodies for the Hells Angels? Cartel Hitman and what he 'really' did not what he was caught for? Or just a dumbass kid who doesn't understand he can't be drunk in prison?

It is so strange, like what did I miss feeling. I feel like sht for not having noticed it, like it was my fault.

Is every CO basically one of those dudes irl who wouldn’t back down from a fight? What I mean is are all of you hard dudes, and no dweebs? In my mind I couldn’t imagine a person afraid of conflict (think the type that won’t correct a wrong food order) working there, but at the same time I think it has to happen.

Maybe someone who thinks they’re cut out for it and look the part, but were scared off early on?

So this one time I was driving a truck of bodies to dump...

Guy was cool as hell though; meet him on the street and you'd never guess. Friendly and always making jokes, very respectful and polite. One of the few guys I think will stay out, he paroled a few years back, he was down for over 20 years. Sucks to say but the guys with 10+ years in usually want to get out and stay out, the dumb kids with 2-5, they don't learn, they come back.

Nope. I know a lot who will bitch out at just being told to fck off. Nothing shttier than seeing them as my partner and knowing if sht goes off or I am attacked they will not be there when I need them. Seen plenty tell an inmate to lock it up (go to their cell), and the inmate tells them no; they just freeze up or want to call a supervisor. Buddy, tell him to go into that cell, or I will and you ain't gonna like how much of your sht is now my sht.

I was a C/O for a while just like the OP. I went into it and had never been into a street fight. Don't need to be a hard ass at all. Been in plenty of situations during the time I worked there. It is called fight or flight...... I had no problem respond to alarms and other situations. Seen multiple stabbings, fights ect...
