Yeah, as I've gotten older I've cared less. Yeah, in a perfect world I'd like to be the Strongest man to ever exist - but that's not happening, and I don't care enough to make chasing numbers a high priority anymore (and haven't for quite a while).

here is generally how it goes as a new lifter.
1. learn the basics
2. get a pump and feel amazing for a few days
3. over time try to get stronger ...AND SEE HOW STRONG YOU CAN GET.
4. admire self and changes and add supps
5. keep chasing numbers and trying to get stronger/bigger.
6. now that you are no longer a beginner, see where your max lifts are.
7. find motivation to keep lifting: a show, chasing numbers, or for other reasons specific to said person.
people here may not care but i guarantee that someone somewhere asks folks how much do you bench, curl, or squat.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Big # lifts are for young men that have something to prove and delusional geriatric psychopaths

That said... I do whole heartedly believe relocating big weight for so many years when I was in my late teens early 20's helped create denser muscle fibers that gives you a "harder" (no homo) look compared to someone who has only ever trained for size. But that is complete Bro Science and I have zero credible sources to provide to back that up other than my personal experiences.

I dont really care how strong I am these days... only how strong it looks like I am.

This thread really makes me regret lifting heavy and I have reevaluated all my goal.

So anyway I did heavy pull-ups negatives for the first time yesterday, I had to set up the different height boxes so I could walk up them like stairs:

it is true, the pros call it mature muscle look, or grainy if your body fat is low enough.

Cope. Good to have hobbies/pursuits and to take those pursuits seriously. Doesnt have to be lifting, but nothing is more pathetic than the loser who jogs the 5k in 30 minutes or gets embarassed in every sport but hey 'im just here to have some fun and not take it seriously'.

Have goals, go after them, do it for yourself.

Maturing in the gym is realizing that functionality and longevity are way more important than just being strong

Furthermore, I rather lift 135lbs on incline barbell press with full range of motion and acute muscle contraction than bouncing around 315lbs off my chest and my butt coming off the bench but thats just me

The OP is correct...the amount of stimulus that you're applying to the body is what matters, not the weight of the tools you're using as a means to apply it.

Although if your tool doesn't make a flopping sound when you lay it out on the countertop it's probably over for you.

I did good ROM, started all the way down and made my chin get up to the bar. That’s my standard of measurement. I am not in competition.

But bro I started out doing only 3 bodyweight reps at 205 bodyweight in March. Now I’m 230 and I can do 12 reps. That’s a big improvement.

But yes the number is meaningless.

In reality, let’s say you go from a 135 bench to a 275 bench. Your actual functional strength doesn’t double. It probably goes up 10%.

It’s just for fun for me.

I started squatting again this year and theres something therapeutic about a heavy set of 8 reps or under on squats specifically, its like as a man its your job to have and make practical use of strength to some degree

it just feels right

Wow, that's really neat.

Anyway, gonna squat 385 for 5+ reps tomorrow and try not to die.

I could try not caring about this specific number, but 5/3/1 is fun, lifting heavy is fun, being strong is fun, and I'd expect aBODYBUILDINGforum to be filled with other men who understand this feeling.

Yeah, I gotta be more careful now than in my 20's, and the gains are excruciatingly slow, but it keeps me lifting, keeps a goal in front of me, and I'll be goddamned if some twink with his years old physique in his avatar has the fukking gal to talk about someone being insecure.

How about an updated physique pic OP? Since you don't care about numbers at all, surely you've been going all in on being lean and maintaining those aesthetics.

Lmao

I definitely get that lifting heavy loses its luster as you age, but heavy is completely relative. Whether you lift for 3, 5, or 12 reps, the weight has to be heavy enough in that rep scheme to make sense, and you're still trying to progressively overload. Ain't a man alive that built a great physique using the same wights he used when he started.

If you're lifting weights, you probably havesomegoal. A great body (for vanity, women, or both) and being strong (for vanity, women.....lol j/k. Nobody gets really strong for women) are the top two. Ain't like we're all going to play football later. If the only reason 30+ lifters lifted was to just "stay in shape", they'd be better off getting their cardio in and doing calisthenics a few days a week.

When you get older you realize feeling and looking good and being healthy is more important then just putting up big weights.

Why is everything black and white? The only people thatjustcare about putting up big weights are powerlifters, not the average miscer. What's wrong with looking good, being healthy, andputting up big weight?

And what constitutes big weight is subjective anyway unless you compete. Big weight for me could be small potatoes for you.

People are "nonlifting" because lifting heavy isn't a priority for some? Sounds a lot like gatekeeping or your idea of progression (in the context of fitness) is very rigid.

Calling people "f@gs" because they aren't prioritizing going heavier and heavier?
