Look into the soybean crushing plant near Cherryvale Kansas being constructed by Bartlett. Look into the expansion of CVR Energy Refinery in Coffeyville Kanas. I've got places you can rent if you move here with a per diem.

How's your net worth / savings / investments looking OP?

I've never been let go before, but it's always possible. I've got enough in liquid to survive 18 months or so, maybe more, before I'd have to consider loans or eating into 401k. No debts or anything. I think about this fact often when I get nervous about work climates.

I got laid off earlier this year and saw it coming too.

Get a LinkedIn premium if you can. Try to maintain a schedule every day and track the jobs you applied for and who to follow up with after a week. Reach out to recruiters too.

Try not to rot and isolate. Apply for unemployment asap as that takes time to process

Lol same

Like 10+ years ago when everyone on here was college aged

It's not so bad now that I've been working for a few years, but it was rough in the beginning.

Oilfield is booming right now, but that is mostly power/controls and it sounds like you're more chip design.

many years of living expenses saved up , thats such a cuck mindset, that money should be invested to the point that those years just multiply and you can just go your whole life without working.

Having 6 figures at your disposal opens up so many opportunity to use that money and borrowed money to make your self anywhere between 20-50% annual return on your money and the banks money. Keep at it and it can easily replace your wagecel salary with the posibility to just multiply it yearly . But most cucks just go ahead and put it into a down payment for a house to be stuck in the rat debt race for the next 20 years being a wagecuck.

just an FYI - there are plenty of engineering jobs in the MIC that don't require elevated clearance levels. I was in the MIC in purchasing and the only clearance I had was the low level - this guy is a US citizen and can be on our property but I worked with engineers on plenty of projects with access to everything they had including drawings.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Went in yesterday to say goodbye to teammates and gossip with some people about layoffs. Going out golfing today. Probably won't go back in until my final day next Wednesday, to turn in my badge and chiet.

There were some big players let go, that no one expected to get let go. They pink-slipped the single most valuable engineer I know in the division, and another guy who'd probably be on your top 10 list of safest dudes.

Connecting the dots, I (and principal engineer brah) was very tied in with supporting one project, and that project might be cancelled. QCOM might just start buying it off the shelf, rather than develop their own version in house.

It's a classic penny wise, pound foolish decision. We will use that project a ton, so it would be long-run cheaper to just own it ourselves, and we would retain control over quality. But when VPs say "15% of the division needs to be fired", directors can say "well we can buy ****ot brah's project off the shelf and fire him", and there's your headcount solution.

I'm not sure. I really want to get a beer with principal engineer brah and pick his brain. He literally just ragequit the office on cut day and walked out without even saying goodbye to his reports. He was a high-strung guy, but I'm guessing that something fukked up happened and he knows something.

I'm on payroll until Dec 13th, and get $25k severance as well. I have $50k liquid in savings and some stock I could sell. Am still filing for unemployment, but I could get about $1500/mo for that in CA. Rent out here is a bish, but I figure I have about 1 year of leash.

About half of that. I was making $128k base + $15k'ish stock options when I walked out the door.

I was likely due for a raise and a fresh round of stock grants after this annual review. QCOM is big on time-in-seat, and 3 years at their entry level basically qualifies you for an auto-promotion. So that may have played a factor in releasing me, but I'll never know the full story.
