Got laid off today

The place I worked for just RIF'ed 3500 engineers in the US today, and I was one of them.

I'm not surprised about it really. Corporate announced that layoffs would be happening 3 months ago, and as the only non-Pajeet on a team of 15 Indians, I frankly expected to be targeted. I'm like the literal red-headed step child in that team. And I'm honestly not that bummed about losing that job either. That place was a snake pit, and I'd been looking around for other positions for a while.

But still.... the "what's next" part blows. It's a **** job market and there's not a lot of openings right now.

I've dealt with this before, when I finished my masters in March 2020, and the "what's next" was applying to the 2 new EE job openings posted across the United States that day, then drinking Admiral Nelson plastic handle rum and playing Overwatch for 8 hours straight. LDAR mode ain't it. It's like the life equivalent of cotton candy... fun for a little bit, but after 2 weeks you just feel dead inside. I'm not going the phuckin BBMG route, that's for sure. Can't do it.

Anyway, I'm going to try to pivot to the US govt or the MIC. Go somewhere that requires a clearance so ****** can't take my job. If you are in engineering and have a hookup, PM me.

Isn’t there a crazy volume of infrastructure projects going on or in the pipeline right now? I’d think electrical engineers would be in very high demand

The only way a company could get away with losing 3500 engineers at once is if they weren't really doing engineering.

Don't worry bromeo, not you just going to get laid off but millions of people who think they have "Job security."

That term is gone now, ain't no security no more

But I imagine you can find another job easier than some considering your field.

There are only so many semiconductor companies in San Diego that have 3500 engineers to layoff. Must be Qualcomm

Damn, sorry to hear. It's always a blessing in disguise to get out of a company that is a bit of a chit hole; I was in that situation myself a couple years ago. It was definitely daunting not knowing where you were going to end up, but things always have a way of working out in the end, srsly.

lol I used to work with a bunch of electrical engineers (I don't think they were in semiconductors, not sure if it makes a difference) but they were never out of a job for long at least where I'm at. You may (or should) have to leave California

I would say if you're looking for stability, find a government contracting job. Pay is better than I thought it would be. I don't know EE market, but in IT the downside is working with legacy tech or COTS, so not something I plan on doing long term.
