Burr grinder and high quality beans are the most important. I wouldn't necessarily recommend a French press off the bat, pour over is a bit more nuanced.

Have a Nespresso and its pretty tits. Convenience of a kureg but it makes damn good espresso and can do coffee......even the coffee gets the got creme on top. Cups/pods avg about $1-$1.20 per. So not horrible.....caveat is you have to use the Nespresso pods (shaped diff and have this barcode on it that it scans so it knows just the right amount of water for each kind.

This is my favorite brand, they used to be pretty unknown except to locals, was in Scotts (High end Seafood restaurant in Oakland) and had a fantastic cup of coffee after dinner, asked them what kind of coffee it was....and ever since then I've bought directly from Peerless Coffee

Thanks for all the help and input brahs. Srs.

stainless steel french press came in. It's actually even better quality than I expected.
I got a good quality hand grinder coming in tomorrow hopefully.
I just got home and went to my local grocery store that has a lot of local roasts and organic coffee. I ended up with Modest coffee brand coffee beans with roast dates from october.

Have been watching videos by that guy posted in the beginning of the thread and his french press video especially.

Will update the thread with my first cup of coffee hopefully this weekend using freshly hand grounded coffee from a local place in a stainless steel french press like a bougie ass mother fukker. Just like I wanted.

This will be my setup for the winter. Moving forward I'll eventually upgrade when it seems feasible and get a big boy machine and a big boy grinder.

Yea I got a hand burr grinder that's pretty high quality without spending $200.

I'll figure the french press out quick. I can get hyper focused on new things and will take the time to figure it out correctly.

Try coffees from different countries. Yemen, Uganda, Ethiopia, Jamaica...all excellent bean growers.

Jamaican and Ethiopian beans are my favorite. Ethiopians are the worlds oldest coffee growers, and their growing conditions make for a great coffee.

Yea what I got today was Uganda, Mexico and guatamala. All single origin. 1 light, 1 medium, 1 dark.

I actually might go back tomorrow and get the Ethiopian blue bottle whole beans coffee. I was surprised they had that brand there and it was suggested earlier in the thread. It's a lighter roast, but it sounded good af lol.

I was always a dark roast drinker until I tried these two. The Ethiopian coffee is surprisingly flavorful for a light roast. Not bitter like a lot of others too.

You'll get more of the flavor with light-medium roast and that classic "coffee smell." Darks have their place but most of the time the flavor is cooked out of the bean.

Yea I'm not a fan of bitter tbh. I'll drink dark roast and I really like the flavor, but I have to put a hefty amount of creamer in it to cut the bitterness.

Yea I had a light roast once at a coffee shop just to try and it went down so smooth and I didn't need any creamer or milk. It was sort of chocolatey with fruit and something else that was really good. Haven't had anything like that since.

I have tried to like coffee for so long but sort of got stuck with k-cups and starbucks/dunkin near me. I hate almost all starbucks coffee. Dunkin is hit or miss. K-cups are completely inconsistent and I'll get like 1 out of 4 that is good and the others are too bitter or almost burnt tasting.

This french press will be my savior. I'll experiment with this bad boy a lot the next month.

Cliffs on my coffee experience just now:
-OP doesn't get in his handheld high quality coffee grinder.
-OP wants to try this coffee bad.
-OP decides to use the mortar and pestle and chooses an organic single source Mexican Dark Roast with notes of chocolate/brown sugar/smooth
-OP hand grinds it, does the french press following a video, and even used less than what I should have for beans (only used 2 tbsp instead of 3)
-OP pours coffee after steeping time
-OP tries the smoothest cup of coffee he's ever tried. Almost no bitterness or acidity.
-OP adds a little bit of whole milk creamer with vanilla.
-OP drinks the best tasting cup of coffee and the least bitter/smoothest cup of coffee in his life and gets an instant coffee boner.

Holy fuk bros. This is the first cup of coffee I've had in my life where I said, "Damn I really want this again." I'm sold. This is a game changer forever. I'm done with energy drinks.

im stopping coffee for the mean time but i always get coffee from a local shop that roasts it every 2 weeks.

I should still probably find a good little coffee shop to get some good coffee near work though if needed. What kind do you get?

well it depends on the season and I really dont have a favorite. the notes on the box are pretty accurate so I just choose whatever I'm feeling that week.

Keep it simple. Going full snob makes the process such a pain in the ass that you won't enjoy it for the marginal gains you get in flavor.

I use an espresso machine, but I buy pre-ground espresso coffee. An "expert" would look down their nose at me for this, but frankly idc.

I get a good foamy top shot of espresso every morning with very little effort.

The coffee I bought in Italy for like $2.50 per bag (some random store brand SERIOUS) is the best pre-ground espresso I ever have made. I think the Italians do a very light roast and it's HNNNnnG

Yea I can't see myself doing much more than this. Hand grinder comes in soon and just doing that with my own beans, and a french press is top tier coffee. Any cup of coffee outside of this would be negligible in terms of being much better to me.

I'm not the biggest espresso guy so I figured there's no reason to get a big machine for me nor a huge electric grinder.

Trying a light roast tomorrow. Never really had that light of a roast besides one cup of coffee in my life so we'll see how it is.

Moka pot all the way.

I use the 3 shot version almost every day. Create a blend of beans 1/2 decaf, 1/2 medium / light roast. (I mix the two so i can have two cups in the morning, too much caffine messes with my sleeps). I also have a single shot, but it's not enough coffee for me.

Super cheap also works for camping / holidays. I've created some major jealousy making coffee on the side of a trail at Yellowstone National park. Put the money saved on a big machine into investments.

IMO the Moka pot is the De razor of shavers - simple cheap super reliable, lasts forever. Also have a Baratza Virtuoso+ grinder and grind super fine.

Glad you are liking the french press! It makes a huge difference in taste. Everyone I've made coffee for with a french press has been impressed. It's really not as time consuming as people think. When I first started using it my ex said he'd only drink the french press on weekends when there's more time. He pretty much changed that up immediately and was using it on work days too. lol
