The cost of fittings and materials has actually come down a bit in the last 10 years. A big part of it is China entering the high-end tile game and now starting to get it right. Yes to the trained eye you can spot the difference between Italian glazed porcelain and Chinese but 9/10 people won’t know the difference and Chinese is less than half the price
Also cabinets etc come mix and match with porcelain tops and flat pack cabinets etc
As noted above you won’t get a 2 person spa bath but that wasn’t pictured
Also I should mention that I’m paying prime cost on thousands of meters of tiles and 20-30 toilets and vanities at a time (mid-high end) so I might be out of touch on what it costs per unit to buy once-off

Two gallons will easily cover this bathroom. What kind of paint, and how many cans will you need?

I guess also for the people saying DIY, it’s not a *trivial* amount of equipment required for a job like this
Tear out you would minimum need a reciprocating demo hammer (mini jackhammer)
Pry bar the wall tiles
Then to lay tiles you would minimum need a decent tile cutter, angle grinder, at least 3 different diamond edge hole saws to get through porcelain, and masonry drills to get through for mounting fixtures
You might get away without a wet saw for the tiles depending on how many cuts and what pattern you were laying
General plumbing tools to unhook and reinstall toilets, shower heads and vanities
You might need a gas torch if the old style copper fittings are sweated/soldered on (ie if it’s an old place they may not have put the taps outside the wall, they might be tee’d in with copper)
Laser level depending on how you were setting the wall tiles and how crooked the floors are
Like if you literally had zero tools you might need $1500-$2k in tools
The biggest barrier is being able to lay tiles straight, it requires some planning, skill and patience
…and suddenly I remember why I only do new construction now lmao

Where I live a basic bathroom install without tile is 10k. It is like the ****ers have a union.
Before anyone says to just do it yourself you have to consider insurance when working on plumbing in an apartment building. They do not always let you choose what they do ala carte either. They have enough work they can move on.

The floor tile may be marble for $4-$10 sq ft. Call it $7 sq ft at 60 sq ft = $420. Bathtubs like the picture go for $200-$1000. Let's say $600 in the middle range. Toilet is $200. Light fixture is simple $150. Faucet doesn't look fancey $150. Shower valve/head $250. Shower door $1000. Mirror is $150. Ceiling vent is $100. If you have to sheetrock the whole bathroom with mud, tape, screws, sanding blocks, sheetrock = $300. Paint = $100. This is a remodel so all the plumbing should be in place with only minor work needed. You're at $5800 with tax.

Take your pick from cheapest to the most expensive Behr paint that Home Depot sells. Two options would be easily under $100 for two gallons. One would be just over $100 and the most expensive is $25 over $100.

Tile 1.5k
Vanity 2k
Paint and other bs/grout/etc 1k.
Shower kit 1k
I'm sure you could spend more but that gets you a nice bathroom.

Can everyone please stop saying they’re going to paint their phukking bathroom walls
You can paint the ceilings and cornices in mould-resistant ceiling white and that’s it
The rest is tiled with waterproofing membrane underneath

If you guys ever try to do your own reno, you're in for a rude awakening.

Toilets are $800 for a nice Italian one, you can go up to $2k for a concealed cistern but nobody wants the maintenance issues on that
Even if you call the materials $10k the $60k labour seems pretty steep without knowing what the actual job entailed in terms of actual repairs, water damage, relocation of pipes etx
But maybe that’s just what labour costs now
Or maybe the guy revealed himself to be an prick when he was getting estimates so they charged him the prick tax

The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

70k? must be trying to use some top of the line stuff there. from personal experience, there's no way it would cost that much otherwise.

If they haven’t done the tear-out a sensible contractor would quote based on the worst case scenario having regard to the age and overall condition of the building

Laser level depending on how you were setting the wall tiles and how crooked the floors are
Like if you literally had zero tools you might need $1500-$2k in tools
The biggest barrier is being able to lay tiles straight, it requires some planning, skill and patience

You don’t even need map gas smh just shut the water off and cut the pipes with a cutter or grinder, since it would be diy just use sharkbite and pex at that point. I thankfully have a propress so I would never have to put sharkbites of tectite fittings in my house

I didn’t know you could mate pex to copper but tbh I don’t know much about that aspect of plumbing
Our plumbing standards allow olive fittings outside a wall so I would cut the copper tube outside the wall, use olives to press into a spigot tap and just run the hot and cold into a mixer tax from these
That pretty minor though, the main thing is if the bathroom is old, water seal is failed and load bearers have rotted out
That will take your estimate from zero to sixty fairly quick

A pipe wrench? You aren’t running gas a simple channel lock will do the shower head, crescent wrench for the toilet and maybe a grinder if the old bolts are rusted.
Why are you using rolls of tape? you don’t use tape on compression fittings or really on anything besides the shower head
Wtf kinda plumbers you got down in Australia

Most anybody can do that themselves over a long weekend for $4K or less. I'd hire a pro if I wanted to switch from a step in to walk-in shower though.
