3. Weapon levels buff your stats faster than attribute point. Get smithing stones and upgrade your weapons regularly.

4. Don't rush straight for the main bosses. You can find great items and level up a lot form just exploring and finding chit. Take your time

5. Early game, southern Limgrave will be great for leveling. Don't know if you've been already, but definitely scour that area for some upgrades.

6. If you haven't already, return to the Church of Elleh to get a very helpful item for bosses.

7. If you're having trouble, summon people to help out. Co op is a fun time.

8. Your first 'soulslike' game is usually the hardest. There's a point in which everything just clicks, and things get much easier. It'll still beat your ass sometimes, but not NEARLY as often.

9. Last, but not least; git gud

ER has no story, but BB does? They both tell the story the same way.

Everything went to chit, items and NPC's give you bits of lore, and you're out to kill a God and fix chit.

Demon Souls is inferior to the others imo.
There's a lot here but I've cleared out a few of the caves and got stuck in the stupid crystal tunnel for an hour or two and made it all the way to the bull and realized I was severely under leveled and found the easy way out. Which slowed me down.

I guess I could go back to the Coastal Cave and maybe try to kill that dragon again in the lake.

I'm level 25 or something
22 Vigor
21 END
24 Str or something

I was trying to get Greatswords to use a different weapon.

You're probably right. That was just for reference. Seems extremely easy to get to for "not being the right way". I can likely kill it at this point I can get it to about 20% and then the AOE gets me. Think I need to time it better.

It was in the bargain bin tho.

Assuming this is satire, I think there is appeal to the game but I think the "challenge" takes away from the "fun" that I try to balance in my games.

Video games are supposed to be fun, why would you waste time playing something you don't like. If I don't like a game after 1 hour I'm out (steam refund lol). Especially at 10 hours, I can tell you that the formula doesn't change much for the next 50.

If you are a first time souls player then Elden Ring is one of the hardest games to start with. A lot of bosses have 1-2 second delayed attacks and very long combos. Some bosses also input read which frustrates me and I love these games. Don't be afraid to do different strategies. There is one fight you haven't gotten to yet where the boss will do a 6 move combo that is very tricky to dodge, but he has a very telegraphed windup. Instead of trying to dodge, if you parry the first swing, you avoid the entire combo and can even riposte him. Or if parries are too difficult, get a shield and put barricade shield on it and just block it, etc. If you really are maidenless then just use summons or spirit ashes.

Having said that, the appeal of these games is sort of overcoming something you initially think is impossible. They are unapologetically difficult but also pretty fair, at least in most cases. People have beaten the game at level 1. I've been doing a level 1 run the past few weekends and I only have two bosses left to beat in the entire game, and I've really enjoyed it, so it definitely is possible, just git gud bruh.

I keep hearing this. "Impossibly hard" but "fair". WTF does that mean? It doesnt make any sense. Its either hard or its not. Yeah they are hard at first but once you got the rythm down its not so bad. I think thats just a stupid way of putting it. Ive played harder games. I think they are just boring and repetitive after a couple hours.

It's not that hard to understand. Hard but fair means low rng, aka you can beat the system flawlessly with enough skill. people have done no-hit runs of the entire trilogies of dark souls. If the game wasn't fair that would never be possible.

I used to play fighting games a lot. For tournaments, you would always see the same folks pretty much in the top 32, even if the tournament had thousands of entrants. This is because fighting games are high skill/low luck, like soulsborne games are.

Compare it to a game like hearthstone, which is a card game. The absolute best players in the world had like a 62% win rate. For tournaments, the top 10 would always be a shuffle, because there was so much randomness in the results. Players in championship games would lose a winning position because their opponent got a 1/100 chance of something happening and there is no counterplay to it. Games like that are low skill/high luck. Could you still say winning a tournament in hearthstone is hard? absolutely, but it's a different kind of hard.

Of the two (high luck vs low luck), high luck games are way more frustrating, because you can easily lose to something out of your control. while soulsborne games are actually low luck, so if you lose most of the time it's just because you're bad, but when you win it's more rewarding because you didn't chance your way into victory.

Gonna have to agree. Bought Sekiro for Christmas cause it was on sale and chit is just stupid. I made it to the final boss and I think I’ll eventually beat it but not sure if the experience was fun. Difficult just for the sake of it and extremely punishing for any little mistake.

If you aren't sure if a game was fun, it probably wasn't. It seems like you got sucked into the laborious take on gaming where it's all about trying to complete a set goal. Just ask yourself what the payoff is for all your hard work.

Yeah i guess. Im just tired of hearing it put that way. I know what they mean. Biggest pain in the ass is having to start from a bonfire half hour from where you died.

Not trying to pry but what part of GA you from? lived in Carrol County 15 years before i came back to the midwest. only thing i miss is the weather right now. got a blizzard coming down

I heard you can cheese it by leveling up the projectile based attacks and just spam them while rolling/dodging/running in circles for a couple hours until the enemy dies

If you want a good fantasy adventure rpg game with good gameplay, go play Dragon's Dogma 1 just in time for the sequel.

Nothing special at all with ER's gameplay. Just difficulty porn like some already said. It's the "git gud" thing, you can brag about to your buddies or random people in the net, but in reality the gameplay is really outdated.

lol that's so meh and it's getting old. basically the only defense that from software fans have when ER's lackluster gameplay is being criticized. doesn't matter if there are so many other games that are much better out there with the same theme/genre, you don't like ER? the only reason must be that you suck at it and it's too difficult for you. keep believing that if it makes you feel better. basically proves that it's just difficulty porn.

Take away the fact that its difficulty can't be changed and you're left with a very ordinary game. Tell me I'm wrong. That's the only thing that makes it "special"

There are side quests but they don't explain much and often leave you confused where to go or what to do. The game is impossible to really complete without going online to read chit up and I really disliked that part about it. Maybe it works in a linear game format where eventually you can find where to go but in an open world it was very frustrating because I don't use guides.

So yeah imo it's a good game but not amazing as most people say. You can experiment with different builds but the combat never really feels "next gen" or different to all the previous souls games. Also, I appreciate a good story and with all the hype about GRRM writing this game I really expected one....esp in a huge open world game that takes 100+ hours to beat. The last third of the game was a large difficulty spike and a massive slog to get through andby the time I was at the end I really had no sense of why I'm even here, fighting a final boss I'm seeing for the very first time who did nothing to antagonize me for the entire journey leading up to that moment. Sorry if that's a spoiler but I felt no sense of accomplishment finishing the game other than the fact that I beat a very difficult boss... Something I already did 50+ times before lol.
This pretty much sums up my problem with the game and why I think it's highly overrated. Aside from it being challenging, the combat feels outdated. It doesn't help that I played ER right after playing Ghost of Tsushima which has a goated melee system. There's really nothing special about it. The narrative and the story is so hard to get through. More than half the time you don't really know why you're fighting this monster or that, and I'm the type of gamer who wants to be immersed in the world and I want to know why I'm having to do certain things, but from software fanboys will tell you "you're just used to games holding your hand and guiding you" BS, nope, I just want to know the purpose of fighting these things other than grinding and "gitting gud"

The creature in the basement is a "bonus boss" in that he doesn't need to be fought to complete the area. He is a bit tougher than the area he is in. Sort of a recurring theme with fromsoft.

Still, good players have beat everything at level 1 with a crappy dagger and no summons.

Most bosses are more about setting up your build than just grinding through them. If you want to keep banging your head against the wall sure, you will eventually get lucky and win. But you could also move on and get better weapons and attacks that will make killing that thing trivial. The right weapon art, the right elemental infusion, and he is trivial.

There is an attack called lions claw you can get very early in limgrave off the claymore in Mourne castle and later on as a changeable skill that makes those types of bosses pretty easy, especially if you imbue the weapon with an element it is weak to. For instance in this case fire. A fire/str build with lions claw and it'd dead in a couple hits.

I remember being hugely frustrated with these games when I first played Bloodborne. The difficulty was insane even early on in the game, and the bosses were mind blowing.

But I was determined to get better, so I started actually learning things like attack patterns, dodging, etc. Once you have those down every major fight has a pattern and you just need to learn it. It takes time and a lot of patience because you constantly die, but then when you beat the boss it's a big rush because the fights are challenging. In a lot of games you can cheese or spam something and take bosses out. You can't really do that in ER unless you're over levelled.

Not a huge fan of these games but I did try them all. Looking forward to Lies of P coming out discounted because I've heard it's amazing.

yeah when i built my first 'great' gaming PC (1080ti etc) I got a bunch of A list games at the time, Witcher 3 for one

realised at that point that it's certainly not all about graphics.

give me secret of mana > Witcher/elden ring anyday srs
