I know the 2012 thing is kind of an EOD meme but it's true.

2012 is when Internet and everyone having smart phones went mainstream, and humanity devolved into a hive mind of sorts, where majority of people just bandwagon for the mainstream opinion on literally every topic, and people have lost their sense of identity and individualism.

I can't argue this. Skyrim was the last blockbuster game imo. I remember going to that release and everyone was talking about it. It was the last one i went to.

You can't really count GTA 5 either because Rockstar only makes a couple games and they are always good. Everything else though is lacking something. I mean hell there's a couple WWE 2k games on the front page now and i don't even know how to reply to them. It's the same game but with slightly better graphics each year.

I think these people could make better games they just don't know how. I mean they still take risks and put out **** like Saints Row they should be able to make other stuff.

I think Saints Row shows off a big difference. Take the games they made before the reboot, they were edgy, politically incorrect, and proud of it. They didn't give a chit about offending anyone or appealing to ideals, they simply wanted to make a game focused on being a parody of gangster chit, and made it. Then take a look at the reboot, where you can clearly see how they tried to be politically correct, didn't want to offend, and it lost the fun it used to be known for. The original games were the product of passion, the reboot was the product of box checking and trend chasing.

So are they just going to keep making the same type of games? I am looking back at the 2000s games and i am finding hundreds of original and innovative titles. Revert back to my WWE 2k comment, why are people ordering and pre ordering these games?

Well that's because most of these Sony games honestly aren't that great unless you are really into cinematic action and Ubisoft style open world games. I mean I used to love the kinda games Sony was coming out with back in the PS1 - PS3 eras, but that all changed dramatically with the PS4. Heck I could argue that there was some stuff that I liked in the early days of the PS4, back when they were willing to carry on some stuff from the PS3 scene, but even then it just didn't seem to hold up. Like Driveclub was cool, but I preferred the Motorstorm titles. Killzone Shadow Fall wasn't bad, but I was never a big fan of the franchise, and the earlier games seemed better. GT Sport was nice, but GT6 was still the complete original GT experience by comparison. Then I guess they really focused on all the hype surrounding games like TLOU and cinematic gaming became the big focus, by high praise from the journalists and fanboys. That's basically when they lost me, I mean I still bought and played a lot of their hyped up exclusive titles, but they just never really did anything for me. By now it's like I don't really have much to reference in the way of Sony games that stood out to me for a long time, because it's been about a decade since they were making games that really appealed to me, with GT7 being the exception.

I think of them the same way I think of the Marvel movie scene these days. Lots of people seem to love them, like you will find a lot of enthusiastic fans on the internet who claim they're amazing and among the best entertainment around, and they get high praise from critics, but that's really just a fanboy and brand/corporate promotion scene when you get down to it. Like the more you are into movies, the less likely you are to consider Marvel flicks among the best movies to watch. They just have a lot of visual flair and mass appeal. That and they really stick to a specific formula that is easily digestible but can get old, repetitive, and predictable after a while.

Yup, there's a good reason why the 2012 thing became such a popular reference. It's when we experienced a major and dramatic shift in online/media culture especially. What you said is spot on, everyone got on smartphones, individualism became a bad thing, and the masses all became easy to influence. If you look at a lot of the popular movements since then, it's all very forced by big bandwagons. Things weren't like that before, you didn't have everyone on social media being influenced to go in the same directions like that.

Heck just look at pop culture before and after. Before then, every decade and era had a distinctive feel with loads of different sub-cultures and movements. After, everything became this big mass-culture hivemind, where all the masses are influenced to be a part of the same sort of mass appeal corporate bullchit. It's why the 2010's didn't really have a distinctive feel and culture like decades before, it was simply the early stages of what we are still a part of.

Fairly confident this isn't what you're asking for OP, since they're not on Steam, but my brain goes to Demon's Souls or FFXVI. Those are like the only two games I really enjoyed on PS5, but especially Demon's Souls. Couldn't get into Spider Man or TLOU. Everything else that comes to mind was already released on PC at the same time.

I wonder if the sales numbers we hear are even real. Is there really 20 million people buying certain games ? Or is this an extension of the dead Internet theory, "sales" a lie for shareholders while 90% of copies just sit on shelves somewhere.

Yeah the whole Saints Row situation really shows off how willing these companies are to just keep doubling down on the same marching orders from the top no matter what. Creators aren't in charge anymore, it's the corporate suits trying to please investors.

But yeah, going back it's crazy how much more variety we used to get as we typically didn't have the same situation with game developers being tied in so much with corporate. That was the benefit of smaller teams and budgets, now they have to have so many people and so much money tied into everything, it's turned everyone into big corporations with all the usual issues related to that scene. I don't think we'll see a return to the way things were unless there's some sort of gaming market crash, which I don't see happening. Mobile has just become so huge, and I don't see that along with PC ever slowing down. Console market seems to be getting slowly phased out though, sorta like how the handheld market got phased out. All the money is in big publishing these days, so AA and indie is where you will find all the creativity and variety. Anything AAA has to be a safe investment that checks many boxes.


Guarantee there is a lot of numbers manipulation going on all over now a days. Who the hell even knows if those are sales, could just be physical copies shipped and number of times downloaded for all we know.

I've tried uncharted which bored me to tears

I've tried God of war which was ok but those stupid puzzles every 5 minutes turned me off the game

I've platinumed demons souls and Bloodborne but I wouldn't consider these Sony games anyway

I've got the plat for Astros playroom

I've tried ghost of tshumina and it also bored me to death, but I enjoyed the multiplayer, pity it had so few levels

I can barely play any games nowadays except stuff like Halo, BF, COD, Forza or fighting games. Everything else is too slow and boring to me. I just boot up any Halo game and it's smooth and flawless. Also fun af. There's like 100 maps on MCC i will never get bored of.
