The problem I have with alot of animes is that they are cheesy as hell. Even if they have gore, or adult themes. The characters just dont behave like people in the real world or in proper movies, everything is exeggerated.
Castlevania on Netflix is pretty good because the chars actually seem like real people, but it also in general has a western vibe to it.

You got the ultra weeb body pillow fan service stuff, psychological thrillers, mindless action, romance, everything.
What usually turns people off from anime is their first show being one aimed at kids, or one with too many anime tropes that someone unfamiliar with the medium wouldn't understand.
If you're looking for something more serious and engaging, i HIGHLY recommend Death Note. It's not only one of the greatest mystery thrillers in anime/manga, it's probably the best one to introduce someone into anime.
Seriously, watch Death Note. If you're into Sci fi, mostly episodic space western with a great jazz soundtrack, I think you'll also enjoy Cowboy Bebop. From there, you'll probably branch out. Who knows, maybe you'll also like the embarrassing weeb chit as well. We won't tell anyone.

If you explore the world of anime you'll run into any of the following pros and cons:
Pros:
- Great stories that you wish there were live action movies/series for (then they turn out cringe though when Netflix or whomever attempts it lol)
- Strong emotional response in the more serious stories: empathy, sadness, gratitude, comedy, inspiration
- Brilliant artwork and animations, very creative stuff sometimes
Cons:
- Weebu awkward chit - like cringe material, sometimes even in the more serious anime as well in an attempt at comedic relief but its just cringe and annoying
- Filler episodes - Fun fact, 41% of the original Naruto series is just filler... and over 50% of Bleach is filler too
- Transitions of studios / artists / writers is very obvious when it happens on a series with multiple seasons, usually for the worse.
- Multi-year wait periods for some series' next seasons, even though the manga has gone way further ahead

OH! i almost forgot cause i didnt see anyone mention One Punch Man. Its so freaking awesome between the epic fights and hilarious dialogue and goofy situations. Its probably my favorite newer anime.

I think i liked the Golden Arc movies the best. Freaking great. I really wish they didnt fuk up the reboot but i would of still watched it. Think i saw the first season and missed the second. Now that the creator is dead are they gonna finish it? Damn story has been going for what 30 years now?

check out death note, its one of the best amines out there.
also ergo proxy is great but i wouldn't recommend it to someone who's new to anime.
code geass is great to but a little slow in the beginning.

Anime is just another medium of storytelling, theres tons of genres in anime that can cater to everyone. Its like asking someone if they like to watch TV and they recommend Friends to you
Some of my favorite recent anime that are good for to get into anime, esp if you like shows like The Shield
Hells Paradise (1 season so far )
Chainsaw Man (1 season so far)
Pluto on netflix
Solo levelling (currently airing 9 episodes in, just generally fun show)
attack on titan (all done, epic story, dont start with this)
Vinland Saga (epic story, on netflix)
Ninja Kamui (all violence)
Then you have some typical shonen more mainstream
black clover
demon slayer
jjk
my hero academia
one punch man
Another I forgot to add: monster! no supernatural superhero stuff, just solid story

Paranoia Agent is a fun one. Baki the Grappler has its moments.Peace Maker.Samurai Deeper Kyo,Now and Then,Here and There is some wierd Nazi like chit with a dictator kinda like Hitler if i remember right. Deadman Wonderland had huge potential. Galaxy Express 999 is an oldie but a goodie. Captain Harlock the OG and the newer CGI movie is good as hell. Fooly Cooly is pretty awesome. Not really anime but SuperJail deserves an honorable mention. Funny and trippy as hell to get high and drink to.
guess that will do for now. tons more

I could never get into it, I've tried because I have some friends that are REALLY into it, but every anime I've see just feels weird to me. I think it's a disconnect between Japanese culture and humor vs ours.
I can watch Futurama all day.
