People make a lot of money in certain jobs they either hate or are indifferent to and then cope with expensive lifestyles that do nothing to make them happier. A working car and a house in a safe area are pre-requisits to happiness. A German engineered car or 2 extra bedrooms and designer furniture in your house 100% arent.
Happiness is derived from multiple things IMO but you need:
- health
- purpose / goals
- relationships (both sexual, friendships, community)
Its a simple equation. At a certain income, and it's lower than miscers probably think, more $$$ literally just means bigger numbers on a computer screen. Outside of something like financial independence and the freedom to pursue your own goals (which is very big milestone ill admit) it does nothing else to happiness

I believe even at the higher amounts......the formula you have laid out is pretty much the same. Your purpose and goals maybe change as you have more time to pursue things that actually bring you happiness.

More money = more options.
Those options give you a greater ability to be both happy and unhappy; you still have to make the right choices.
The real problem is that we don't control what makes us happy. Happiness is like horniness; some things make you horny and some don't. You get no say in it. People will look around at what seems to make other people happy and what the media/society tells them will make them happy and try to do that, but until they have that, they won't know if it actually makes them happy or not.
Happiness doesn't lie in getting what you think you want, but in wanting what you've got. You don't achieve it by ticking off a list, but rather just wake up one day and think "my life is good".

OP, that's easy to say when you grew up in a time in American history of extreme wealth. Try telling the next gen of Americants being replaced by Gimmegrants that money wont make them happy when they become debt slaves to the Nosebergs.
The average citizen is becoming 2nd class, which means the below average citizen will be 3rd class. Money is becoming more important then ever, brah.

The saying means you cant go out and buy raw happiness. Meaning if you're very rich, you can still be sad.
But to imply that having money doesn't make happiness come quicker, faster, easier, and more abundantly, you are mistaken.

Friends and family and romantic partners are the most important thing for happiness. Money doesn't MAKE you happy but it definitely ALLOWS you to be happier.
Money makes a BIG difference in most people's happiness, including my own.

I don’t know I’ve never seen a sad person on a jet ski have you?
But for real, money is just one aspect of life. You need your health, relationships, and self respect to have a chance at feeling fulfilled
As I’m in my mid-thirties now my income is growing by leaps and bounds prolly earning $350,000 USD this year on top of a boatload of equity in two SMB’s. And the future looking way up. But I’ve learned that even $1mm income is both a lot and not a lot at the same time
It’s clear there’s an infinite supply but with diminishing returns. Time with your loved ones is much more valuable. Only nerds coping with their childhood trauma don’t understand that

Everyone needs to remember that, any and all decisions you made, very the bast decisions you could have made at the time, based on the information and insight you had at the time.
The only thing you can do, is to look back at those decisions...
And smile.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I would definitely do a few things different.....like break off sooner and start my own stuff sooner. But I dont regret the time I traded for the experience and money specifically in my situation.
And a more direct answer......No. I dont think the younger me would listen to that advice. I heard it back then but my dumb ass just thought "you probably havent made enough money"..........which is why im starting to believe you have to experience it to truly soak it in.

100% agree. I changed jobs a few months ago, went from working in-office each day 9-5 (often 9-closing) and doing a job I didn't really like managing people who pissed me off to no end, to now doing a 4 day WFH/1 day in-office job that's 9-5 non-negotiable and more enjoyable with a good team. Took a pay-cut for it but that's lessened by only having to commute 1x vs 5x a week, and my state of mind is so, so much better.
On paper the other job was better in that it paid a few grand more per year, but the reality of life is so much better now. Literally everyone I know comments on it and how happy they are for me now.
Work to live, don't live to work.

Is this just some humble brag thread?
I'm a simple/easily content man who doesn't give a chit about fancy things. Time is our most valuable asset though, so having enough to live very comfortably and never have to worry about wagecucking again would increase happiness quite significantly I would imagine.
