Give an example.

Since insulin is needed the most for carbs, shouldn’t the diet be low in carb and high in fat? How is this not obvious?

You are weird and obsessed.

Op,

Your son is likely still in what is called “honeymoon phase” of his type 1, meaning pancreas is under attack and still making some insulin. In this case a low carb diet (close to zero grams) has been shown to reverse the condition completely as beta cells go back to work. If not, then the insulin dose he will require will be much less, which in turn means less side effects.

There was a study where pregnant moms who had gluten in their diet were twice as likely to have diabetic type 1 kids.

I could go into these things more, but the point is obvious here. Be careful when you go to Pediatrician and dietitians, 100% you’re going to be told put your kid on the highest possible insulin dose and to give him as many carbs as possible all day long. The opposite of what should happen.

Firstly, sorry to hear about this, I hope your kid is fine.

When I hear people suggest Type 1 diabetes can be treated through diet alone, it pisses me off.

Unlike Type 2 diabetes, the genetic form (i.e. type 1 diabetes) is not something which can be treated through just diet. Anyone who suggests otherwise does not fully understand, it is an autoimmune disease which this person has to live with for a lifetime.

Type 1 means a complete lack of insulin in the body, and there is a level of insulin (known as the basal rate) which is required to stay alive when you DON'T eat.

Insulin is the primary treatment to enable people to consume their daily intake of protein, and before it existed, the only option was to go on a starvation diet until Insulin emerged as a form of treatment.

Please work with the medical team in the first instance to understand what you need to do, and be especially wary of the media, who are overly fond of reporting "cures" without solid evidence.

FYI - I'm type 1 diabetic and have lived with it for 32 years so far.

Definitely surreal. Yeah, they are. The children's hospital in Austin is actually pretty well regarded. They had the pediatrician, an endocrinologist, and a dietitian meet with us today. Have follow ups with the endo and dietician as well.
Keto/carnivore may not "cure" him but it require him to use much less insulin which in the long term is a great thing. Type 1 diabetics if left to eating a SAD can get type 2 as well and then they are in a real pickle.

Before jumping straight to that, there is a massive caveat to add: type 1 diabetics have antibodies attacking themselves, which cannot be cured. It can be treated with insulin, which is still required even by those on a low carbohydrate diet based on the evidence.

This. My father has T1 diabetes. There’s no cure or natural alternative to insulin. Fatties who get T2 from eating cake and ice cream might because their disease is caused by poor behavior, but T1 people did nothing wrong, it’s just a genetic fluke.

My pops lives an active life, is in pretty good shape. OP there might be some complications in later life, he’s had dental issues and diabetic retinopathy. Nothing that hinders living a full life though.

By the grace of God I seem to have been spared the same fate, although sometimes I wonder if I’ll be one of those 1% of people who get adult onset T1. Doctors have told me my children will have an elevated risk more so than myself.

We can access all information in existence through phones in our pockets, but people are still suffering from diabetes in 2024. You’d think they’d have a cure by now.

Type one is not a genetic fluke,

as mentioned earlier, there are actual human studies that show when pregnant mothers eat gluten their children are twice as likely to be type one diabetic. There are many other links to many other stupid behaviors that dramatically increase risks of type one diabetes.

also when type one is caught early in the so called honeymoon phase there are human studies that show that it can be completely reversed without medication, And without insulin, in fact, there is a Hungarian team that did that just recently,

type one is an autoimmune disease, there are no such things as genetic flukes, that’s a copout when people don’t want to take responsibility for their ****ty health choices They and their parents have made in life.

In conclusion, again, it’s important to remember that low carbohydrate diet will help reduce the insulin dose, which improves quality of life.

find a qualified pediatric endocrinologist who knows his sht to start the correct treatment asap

simply injecting insulin will only worsen the pathology by replacing the residual functions of the pancreas, there are better alternatives nowadays.

Now I regret repping you earlier. Type 1 is a fluke, and to think it can be 'cured' is fcking dumb.

You should reconsider, there are human trials that show strong correlation and even causation between stupid behaviors, like consuming gluten during pregnancy and kids developing type one diabetes, these are human trials, and they are not up for debate, also recorded human trials that specifically reverse type one diabetes, if caught early on, This is all publicly available information, but you shouldn’t hold your breath to see this information on government diabetes websites, because they tell you that it’s OK to eat cookies and cake and ice cream. As long as you continue to pay for their drug.

Even if the damage has been done, and the person will need insulin for the rest of their life, it is indisputable that low carbohydrate diet will allow for a smaller dose of insulin, which dramatically improves the side effects and long term quality of life of the diabetics. I could give you links to these things all day long, but you can just Google it yourself, these are legitimate medical publications, I don’t understand why this is such a controversial topic.

I’m sorry to hear OP, I am a type 1 diabetic as well. It is tough at first but once he learns how certain food effect his blood sugar and the insulin dosage it gets easier. I second him getting a continuous Glucose Monitor such as the Dexcom g7. It measures your blood sugar every 5 minutes and is honestly a game changer for diabetes. Also, while a couple people in my family have T2, there is no one in my family that has type 1 so it does happen

You don't understand what you're talking about. As usual.

Sucks OP. Even with an insulin pump and GCM, diabetes still sucks.

He has to be under the care of an experienced endo for sure and leverage treatments.

However, it is not wise to fully disregard emerging evidences.

Remember the keto diet was used to treat childhood epilepsy which doesn't respond well to drugs.

Pattern of eating that causes biochemical reactions in the brain outperformed anti seizure drugs in that case.

This. It reflects that you did more than most parents regarding what was under your control. I’m sorry to hear about your son’s condition nonetheless.

For what it’s worth, I know someone with type 1 who used to walk me from my parent’s store to a pizzeria back when I was a kid in the early 90s. She’s a grandmother now, and it did not stop her from living a long and happy life.

So my wife is type 1 and the technology on insulin pumps is insane now compared to even 10 years ago. He’ll be alright, it’s definitely a terrible thing to have, you’ll have ups and downs and be constantly worried about low sugars but after some experience he’ll live a fairly normal healthy life. Best wishes brah.

Here is a paper I mentioned earlier, medical researchers in Hungary proved they can reverse type 1 diabetes with low carb diet if caught early.

https://www.ijcasereportsandimages.c...-full-text.php

This is because type one diabetes is not an overnight thing, it takes a while for all the beta cells to die, there are many papers like this, and endless case reports etc.

Dr. Bernstein, who wrote the best selling book on type one diabetes, himself a diabetic since childhood who is like 90 years old now, and is considered to be the leading expert on type one diabetes, recommends less than 30 g of carbs per day for type 1 diabetics, these are people like him Who do this all day for their entire life, they have more letters next to their doctor title name than there are letters in an alphabet, I don’t understand what all the seething is about. In the words of Dr. Bernstein glucose is poison for diabetics, it’s that simple.

Low carbohydrate diet is a lifestyle choice, I know type 1 diabetics do it to reduce their level of insulin, but you must understand the information has to be on point if you go down this path.

Keto coupled with high blood sugar levels is dangerous, hence the controversy.

Suggesting that type 1 diabetes can be "reversed" through diet alone is an emotional response, insulin is required for treatment.

Suggesting that type 1 diabetes can be "reversed" through diet alone is an emotional response, insulin is required for treatment.
I posted one post above yours a well known paper where type one diabetes was reversed with diet alone.

And also Keto is literally low blood sugar levels, that’s precisely the point of the diet. That is precisely the reason why leading authority on type 1 like doctor Bernstein restrict carbohydrates to under 30 g per day.

dr Bernstein himself would never say u can reverse it on zero carb

like yeah maybe extremely rare cases, tho i've never heard of that myself. only recent trials in which they say they've done it in the earliest stages, but that's not just doing a carnivore diet afaik

ur not accounting for environmental damage... i bet if everyone ate perfect people would still get fukked up
