So is it immoral to eat pigs, chickens, cows, octopus... sentient animals? I just want to understand if the examples of more intelligent sentient animals is the line your draw or whether it's all sentient animals?

It isn't, but it is how every animal is hardwired to run. That's especially true for social animals like humans. You can think an "alien" species would be different, but given what we know, given what we have seen, it's more likely that they're very similar to us if they exist. There's a reason every single mammalian vertebrate in this world has 4 limbs.

I have average memory retention. You shouldn't be having lapses in memory at 39 years old. Get that checked out. I also noticed that you didn't answer my question.

Can a Yahwehcell tell me why it might be immoral for aliens to eat us as a delicacy but it's moral for us to eat other sentient beings?

I'm getting awfully confused about this whole objective morality business!

Chickens, cows, pigs, octopus. In fact, a lot of our animal diet are sentient beings.

Is it "intelligence" that is the arbitrary line here? In which case, why is it okay to eat pigs? Why it is okay to eat octopus?

None of those other than maybe octopodes are sentient. A gorilla or a dolphin, those are sentient animals, and I've never seen their meat in a supermarket.

What do you think sentient means here? Those animals are absolutely sentient. They experience emotions, they feel. Pigs recognize themselves and others. What are you even talking about brother?

Of course they’re sentient.

I didn’t eat meat for 5 years. Killing animals for pleasure (food) is immoral tbh. You’ve got to give it to the vegans. I just accepted it. Although I’m not religious.

They do feel, they do not have feelings. Those are different things. A cow for example will look at a mirror and react as if it sees another cow, not itself. It has no concept of self. Humans are special because they can think, not just react to stimuli. Now this doesn't mean it's ok to torture and make cows suffer, but a cow doesn't know it's being raised for food until it gets hit with the captive bolt gun, and that's only if the gun isn't used correctly.

The animals are killed for food because we were made to eat meat. There's a reason vegans go to prison for trying to feed their babies vegan diets. Humans need animal products to thrive.

A pig doesn't contemplate life. Pigs are smarter than dogs, but that is a really low bar.

I guarantee the vast majority of meat you eat is for pleasure.

Animals being sentient is not a debatable topic btw.

IDK what you mean by eating for pleasure. I eat whatever tastes decent and will meet my macro and micro nutrient requirements.

How are you using the word "sentient", do you mean as in they feel physical stimuli, or they have the ability to reflect and reason?

It doesn't fit in with my philosophy. I enjoy the discussions though, and I have studied quite a bit. My background was growing up in a very strict Macedonian Orthodox household. I lived in Rome for 2 years for a broader look at the Roman philosophies. I'm agnostic, IRL I do what I can to help people. I've lucked out in that I made a lot of money so now my time is generally spent between raising my little ones, my volunteer work and I have a gym with a few of my friends. I'm actually nice (lmao) outside of this forum where I'm a big horrible meaning leftist cuck (or some variation of that).

I greatly respect the words ascribed to Jesus, I like some of the philosophies and ideas there. But I despise the church built upon his name. I always had huge problems with the Hebrew scriptures, namely Yahweh and his being. I got quite big into apologetics, and it turned pretty analytical in the end.

I still have good conversations about all of this with the wider family which is actually pretty mixed these days with various philosophies varying from something akin to Hinduism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Eastern Orthodox and bits in-between.

Who said anything about anthropomorphizing a cow?

We have plenty of studies that show how complex these animals are and what they feel and good indications to their emotional states and how the process everything. You can't just make a claim like "they're not sentient", this is baseless lunacy.

I don't think it is hard to fathom. We ourselves have produced extensive knowledge of ants and have gone out of our way to learn as much about them as we can.

Imagine if we discovered an ant that communicated with an intelligible language and not merely pheremones.

Kinda how I feel about Jesus vs the church. I like Jesus and think he's based asf.
I'm not anything but I believe in a God just cause idk to me, it's insanity if there isn't some creator out there. Things have order and chaos doesn't make sense.

I picked the Bible up and also the Quran to see what it says. Some based things in both books.

Anyone read the Ethiopian Bible?

The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

I'm not anything but I believe in a God just cause idk to me, it's insanity if there isn't some creator out there. Things have order and chaos doesn't make sense.

I picked the Bible up and also the Quran to see what it says. Some based things in both books.

Anyone read the Ethiopian Bible?
I mean I'm agnostic really. I wouldn't regard myself as an atheist.

And on the Tewahedo, I've not read all the additional books, just a handful. It wasn't something I took much interest in but maybe I'll circle back at some point.

The Quran is pretty interesting and well done. But there's also a glaring issue with the problem of Aisha and consent that can't be looked past.

I'm more on the "there's a God" and Jesus is based but also people are kinda *******s in all religions. Gotta also say though, there's good people too.

I'm gonna pick up Erhmans book I was talking about this weekend. Honestly you reminded me about it the other day.

Meh, idk man all the books got little girls in it apparently. I found the Quran and the Bible read differently tbh. A lot of similarity in some ways though.

Christianity and Islam kinda appeal to me but we shall see. The rabbis won't accept me and idk if I wanna sacrifice chickens tbh

For sure, I mean it's technically the same God, right?

Grab it and tell me what you think. There's another I've got somewhere about the history of Yahweh. I'll dig it out but that is super interesting - I can't recall the authors though

Apparently. It's crazy how the Abrahamic religions are fighting and yet they all love supposedly the same guys (minus how they view Jesus I guess).

I had a thread earlier about why Jews can't say God's name. Idk if you have much on that
