This is exactly right. Alcohol is pretty damn easy to give up if you're content going into hermit mode and focusing on work for an extended time. Anytime I break a long period of not drinking is when I absolutely start going crazy from boredom.

I honestly don't even understand how people can become dependent on alcohol, unless they're using it to mask some other unpleasant feelings.

I actually eat less when drinking. Many times I would just skip dinner and go to sleep right away. Also it helps me sleep actually. I can't quite get the same deep sleep I get after drinking
