My house was 1400 a month 10 years ago. House payments have tripled. TRIPLED while incomes have barely gone up

First off, he rate on a 30 year today is 6.5
Taxes in Illinois is 2.07 so it’s more like $11700 annually
I am not trying to say one way or another. What I am calling out is your numbers (the facts) are incorrect in order for you to support your narrative.
Yes housing has gone up. So stfu and stack paper if you want a house. Times have changed. Control your own destiny based on the variables.
What’s the alternative? Sir around and cry about it?

Small towns don't have income opportunities

The point of the thread is average to slightly above average people could have a great life in 2013
Now you need a top 5% income as a millenial to have a good life

Now? Even a degree doesn't do much today. It's almost like new graduates are getting scammed.
The game is different now. When you compare 2024 to 2004, it gives you a great look at how living standards have gone to chit. It also gives everyone who lived during those times something to compare and it's a realistic outlook.
So what's next? Everyone is gonna have to get their masters? After that is saturated, is a PHD the new minimal requirement??

That was very well the case 20 - 30 years ago which is why so older folks keep repeating that same sentiment. The older generation hasn't realized the game has changed.
And no, a go getter mentality shouldn't be required to live comfortable. Not everyone has that mentality. Go to college, get decent grades, network some, find a good company and do all the work to satisfactory. that should all be enough for a comfortable average life.
Go getters mentality should be reserved for those who want to be upper middle class.

You can't be average anymore, you need that go getter mindset.
Not every kid or teenage will be some leader who can make their own decision.

If you mean smaller towns 1 hour from the city, those also have high rent.
