I am not a fan of the guy because he is a flaming liberal but I also dont believe this story.

Thats simply not the way the military works. I spent 20 years in the navy and in order to retire it took me about 6 months of all sorts of paperwork. That was at the end of my enlistment as well.

If people could just resign when a deployment came up, nobody would ever go on the deployments.

Nobody wants to go on them, you go because you have to. So if he could just "quit" and leave everyone hanging, why didnt all the other guys do the same thing?

Makes no sense and I honestly dont but it.

What most likely happened is he had been in a number of years and it was time to hang it up. He had to have submitted his paperwork a long time in advance,. Its the military, a gigantic slow moving thing.

serving in a NG role is not serving for a quarter century. NG/Reservists have regular jobs while they do some minimal "attendance" weekends with a couple weeks of training once/year. NG/Reservists deployed during OIF/OEF but he didn't.

I can see how his claim would cause some backlash.
