Kind of reminds me of a friend of mine. Guy is VP level and making good money. Wife seems to have a plan to spend every penny of it. She's from Mexico and grew up poor. Several years ago they built an up/down duplex down there. Upstairs is for when they go to visit, downstairs for her parents. Parents already had a house, but now they live downstairs and the older brother is living in the parents house. I just talked to him about a month ago and apparently they bought a few acres out in the bush and are in the process of building another house.

I'm planning to retire in the next 3 years. We're the same age (56) but he says he can't afford to retire any time soon. It didn't help that they bought a restaurant and ended up selling it a couple years later losing $400K in the process. Pretty sure that was her idea as well. She's currently traveling in Europe with two of their grown kids and families for the past month or so. He's back in the US working to pay for it all.
