"lol no"?
You can argue maybe the first four albums by metallica. After AJFA… mrgadeths discography ****S all over metallicas. Dead fkn srs. Haven't been impressive by anything metallica has put out for nearly 2 decades…. while megadeths recent works are much better.
Dystopia actually is one of their best albums imho. Crazy to have that kind of release at this point in their advanced age tbh
NOW, If we are talking about live performances I will agree metallica is higher quality; Sure. I've seen both live (and just saw megadeth for like the 15th time just a few days ago). Love both bands, don't get me wrong.
But the better overall skill and discography easily goes to deth.

Might wanna update your original post if you are speaking on live performance only….
If you mean career and discography wise, they are far from the GOAT.
EDIT: OP's username checks out. Just noticed

Dude they sound just as good now as 1985 live. James voice is back and everything else is perfection. I saw them Friday. Unreal, absolutely unreal

Saw them both in their prime(90s) and Maiden were way better
TBF, I cant speak for now and all bands have good and bad nights
Pretty pumped, I will be seeing Maiden live again in a few weeks

Live, they are up there, saw them in the 90s with GNR, mosh pit was crazy. Glad to say I saw them at the top of their game.
Best live band I've ever seen though is Rush, from a technical standpoint, no one could touch them, but some don't like their sound.

Best band? Nah.
Great band live? Sure.
Lars sucks. He's a whiny bitch and his drumming and attitude ruined what could have been one of the best bands of all time.
Napster.
Turning down the bass on And Justice For All.
His attitude towards Jason Newsted, who was actually injecting life into an otherwise stagnant band
His attitude in general. Dude is a C-level drummer who acts like he invented the drums. He's a great businessman but mediocre musician at best.
TL;DR If they had made a good album in the past 20 years and got a less full-of-himself drummer, then they'd be a top contender.

IIRC Rolling Stone listed them as one of the greatest artists ever, better than Eminem and GnR. Watch Mojo rated them higher than U2 and one of the most defining acts of all time. I can't off the top of my head think of a band that has done more to bring heavy metal into the mainstream. They've even influenced Laday Gaga and Miley Cyrus.
Top 20 I think - acts like Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. get in the way along with pop chit.
You can't deny everything from Ride the Lightning to Black Album was effing amazing. The kinds of guitar tones they achieved were crunchy AF and still hold up to this day. But after their selling out, they had a major slump and it's like they just didn't practice their instruments anymore.
Kirk Hammett though - he is a basic bitch at guitar and just not good at lead. Very basic stuff from a guitarist's perspective. There are plenty of acts with a much higher degree of musicianship but their complexity will make them less popular.

So much this.
Saw Metallica in 86 and 89. I'd agree their first 4 albums are classic top tier metal but they haven't been relevant since Justice. 30 years ago.
Loads, Gay Megnetic…whatever.
Other 80s metal acts still kicking like Exodus and Voivod simply blow them out of the water.
Megadeth has had some sh*t releases, everyone does, but theyve pretty much been outperforming Metallica by a wide margin since Rust in Peace.
When you consider their overall career and discography, Megadeth is the much better band.
Would probably place Metallica in all time top30 due to their first 4 albums, which were undeniably great.
But GOAT is laughable.
