As of June 11, 2024, Chinese nationals from mainland China who have a hukou in mainland China need to get an entry permit from the Public Security Bureau to visit Hong Kong. This permit is called an EEP, and it's required for all types of visits, including short and long visits. The EEP also needs an exit endorsement, which is similar to a visa and limits the length of the stay. The exit endorsement also states how many times the person can visit Hong Kong, such as once, twice, or multiple times.

You’re all kind of wrong about Hong Kong.

a) It is 20 minutes from Mainland and takes a minute to get entry requirements, almost the same time as buying a train ticket.

b) You cannot do business that easily across the Mainland border, so not many commute. Just visiting or bigger trips.

c) There is an enormous amount of space in the Hong Kong territory. All the residences are in like a few % of the land in the middle. People just elect to not live 15 minutes further out and pay for city center locations.

What is the point you're trying to make? If there's no development in a certain area, there's certainly a reason for it. Answer my question. Assuming what you said is correct, then there are certainly properties to be rented within a 15 minute excursion of the city centers, so people are choosing to live in squalor rather than commute an extra 15 minutes?
