Theres more than 1 way to make a diver. See AP Diver or IWC Aquatimer. But everybody copies the Rolex, cause the Rolex Sub is a tried and true tool watch. As are most Rolex's.

That being said, Divers arent really my thing. I own zero divers and if I were to buy a diver tomorrow I probably wouldnt get a Sub either. But I still have a deep appreciation and respect for the sub. I dont dislike it, I just dont lust after anything thats not a chronograph.
really feel like rolex doesnt get enough love on this forum. alot of people seem to think they are just overpriced time pieces. so let me remind everybody

That's not at all the case, Rolex gets plenty of love, but that doesn't take away that the sub is the go-to watch for any idiot that wants to show he's got a bit of money. It's the go-to watch for people who know nothing about watches, don't have a passion for watches, simply because it's so recognizable. It doesn't take away anything from how good the watches or their history are, but it's a bit like Merc/BMW/Audi; once every douchebag has it, I don't see much appeal in having one myself - despite still appreciating the design.

And yeah they keep their value very well, simply because of the douchebag-effect. Everyone wants one to be able to show they've got a bit of money.

That being said, I love my 3 Rolexes.

Anecdote: On my US trip I met a dude in Tampa, Florida. We got talking, and he mentioned he's a banker, but he'd much rather just follow his passion of fishing, perhaps give fishing tours etc. Then - since watches are (currently) a very important aspect of my life - we got talking about watches. Well, I got talking, since he knows nothing about it, he's only interested in the status/prestige they give you. So in his supreme American way of trying to keep up with the Johnsons, this is what he said: "Yeah I've got a few watches as well, 2 Movado's (and some poopy **** I (kaba) forgot), yeah nothing special, but I'm thinking of selling them and getting a submariner you know?" He had no interest in the watch itself, just in the status it has.

I agree it definately is a go-to watch to anyone who simply wants the 'status' of owning a somewhat expensive watch. Rolex is of course such a mainstream brand and the Sub probably the most iconic watch, so it's the obvious choice for that market.

I guess the general question is, should this conception of Rolex diminish your view on it as a brand? I personally was initially put off by Rolex for the reasons mentioned here but after a little research I decided to just buy what I like and I'm glad I did; if there were only 50 Subs ever created and it was as rare as rocking-horse **** it would still be the same watch (physically).

To be influenced by what other people wear, regardless of the reason, is not being true to your own preferences. It is hard it today's heavily influenced, bogged down social media to not have external influence but you should buy a watch, or anything for that matter, because of quality for your dollar, aesthetic appeal and to suit your own needs and preferences.

The sub is a truly time tested piece. It hasn't changed much. Cars change a ton, so sure, the brand may have a good track record but you can't reallyyyyyyy tie a modern car to its historical ancestor (there are some exceptions that vaguely resemble their predecessors). A submariner is, for the most part, the same watch as it was way back in the day. And with good reason. Yes, it's everywhere. Yes it's heavily sold. Admittedly, yes douchebags who want social status buy them. But at the end of the day you're getting a quality watch that can be passed down. We all eat, sleep and breathe for the same reason, but our purchases don't have to mock that.

Obviously there are other great options. Obviously everyone is entitled to an opinion. At the end of the day, as always, buy what makes you happy.

Hey guys,

My Orient Mako band fell apart the other night when I was out, and I think the issue is that it was adjusted too tight and the bars were too thin…

I'm searching for a new band and thicker bars - you brahs have any recommendations? Not sure if I'm trying to go with a metal band or a leather one… I didn't really like the stock band anyway, so I figure I might as well re-adjust it with a new band.

New watch day.

Sup brahs. Finally pulled the trigger on a new watch and got it in the mail today. I wanted an automatic chronograph that was sporty and <42mm and decided on the 144 St Sa. Iv'e only had it about an hour as of writing this but first impressions are really good. I was drawn to the design of the case as its not something you see everyday but at the same time its not something that stands out and says "look at me".

Hopefully I'll get some better pics for you guys soon.

Also, thank you to all the regular watch brahs that post in here. I think you guys definitely steered me in the right direction.

Put in the order for an Speedmaster Automatic. Hnnnng, can't wait for it to arrive. Found a dealer in Greece that had a reputable brick and mortar store as well as good references all around. Getting it second hand, but it will be including 1 years guarantee and their in-house watchmakers have serviced the movement.

Thanks brahs. Yeah I can see how the design is not for everybody but I guess that's one of the reasons I was attracted to it. Just the right amount of uniqueness without being gaudy and obnoxious (imo at least).

Anyone else ready to ditch r/Watches?

Every single day its like:
My first "real" watch…
Picked up this gem…
Speedmaster…
*drool*
Seiko/Orient

Irritating as ****. Ready to make the Misc and WUS my horological home. Also, did anyone see that thread where the guy said his wife allowed him to purchase 2 watches if he bought a cheaper wedding ring? He bought 2 entry level ETA based watches. I think it was Mido and Hamilton. I'd rather have a nice wedding ring than a cheap wedding ring and some cheap watches.

f71 is chill. And Dr. Ranfft and mr Richter are invaluable resources for vintage watches.

I tried navigating reddit once and quit after five minutes.

I browse watchuseek's dive and public forum. Post occasionally, but mostly use it to sell.
